Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

The active ingredient of Panatusa forte is butamirate, a centrally acting antitussive agent that does not belong to opium alkaloids either in terms of chemical or pharmacological characteristics.

Has a direct effect on the cough center, thereby suppressing coughing. Possesses bronchodilatory activity. Improves spirometry (reduces airway resistance) and blood oxygenation, making breathing easier.

Pharmacokinetics

Once in the gastrointestinal tract, butamirate is rapidly and completely absorbed.

With repeated use, the plasma concentration of the drug remains linear, cumulation in the body is not observed.

Butamirate undergoes hydrolysis in the blood, initially to metabolites of 2-phenylbutyric acid and diethylaminoethoxyethanol, which also have antitussive activity.

The substance itself and its metabolites are almost completely (about 95%) bound to plasma proteins. This explains their long-term therapeutic effect and long T ½ (half-life).

Metabolites are excreted primarily by the kidneys, with acidic metabolites being significantly associated with glucuronic acid. T ½ is 6 hours.

Indications for use

  • treatment of dry cough of any etiology, including whooping cough;
  • suppression of cough during surgery, bronchoscopy, in the preoperative and postoperative periods.
