Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Bromhexine has an expectorant and mucolytic effect.
It activates the ciliated epithelium, reduces the viscosity of sputum, helps to increase the volume of sputum and improve its discharge, and also stimulates the production of endogenous surfactant, which, during respiration, ensures the stability of alveolar cells.
The therapeutic effect develops after 2–5 days from the start of admission.
Pharmacokinetics
When taken orally, 99% of bromhexine is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract within 30 minutes, the connection with blood plasma proteins is 99%.
Bromhexine crosses the blood-brain and placental barriers and into breast milk.
It undergoes oxidation and demethylation in the liver, metabolized to ambroxol. In severe liver disease, there is a decrease in the clearance of bromhexine.
The half-life is 15 hours (this is due to slow reverse diffusion from tissues). It is excreted in the form of metabolites by the kidneys.
In patients with chronic renal failure, the excretion of metabolites is impaired.
Can cumulate with repeated use.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Bromhexin 8 Berlin-Chemie is used for disorders of secretion and transport of sputum associated with acute / chronic bronchopulmonary diseases (tracheobronchitis, emphysema, acute and chronic bronchitis, etc.).
Contraindications

- exacerbation of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
- sucrose-isomaltase deficiency;
- intolerance to fructose or galactose, lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome;

- individual intolerance to the active or additional components of the drug.
Relative [diseases and (or) conditions in the presence of which caution is required when taking Bromhexine 8 Berlin-Chemie]:

Instructions for the use of Bromhexine 8 Berlin-Chemie: method and dosage

- children 6-14 years old, as well as patients weighing up to 50 kg: 1 tablet;
- adults and adolescents from 14 years old: 1-2 tablets.
Patients with impaired renal / hepatic function need to reduce the frequency of administration or the size of the single dose (medical advice is required).
The duration of admission is determined by the indications. If you need to take the drug for more than 4-5 days, you need to consult a specialist.
Side effects
In most cases, Bromhexine 8 Berlin-Chemie is well tolerated by patients.

Overdose
The life-threatening consequences of overdose are unknown.
Possible symptoms: dyspeptic disorders, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting.
Therapy: gastric lavage, artificial vomiting during the first 1-2 hours after taking the drug.
With forced diuresis or hemodialysis, elimination of bromhexine does not occur (associated with a high volume of distribution and a high degree of protein binding).
special instructions
In the course of therapy, it is recommended to drink sufficient liquid, as this increases the secretolytic effect of the drug.
Due to the presence of a risk of delayed discharge in the airways in case of impaired bronchial motility or a large volume of sputum secreted, taking Bromhexine 8 Berlin-Chemie requires caution.
In patients with severe renal insufficiency, the possibility of accumulation of metabolites formed in the liver should be considered. Monitoring of renal function is recommended during long-term therapy.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
While taking Bromhexine 8 Berlin-Chemie, you need to be careful when driving.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
The first trimester of pregnancy is a contraindication to taking the drug.
Pediatric use
Bromhexine 8 Berlin-Chemie is not prescribed for children under 6 years old.
