Gymnastics for the elderly
The importance of gymnastics for the elderly can hardly be overestimated. Yogis claim that a person is young while his joints are young. To paraphrase, we can say that a person is as young as his musculoskeletal system is young. Movement is life, and therefore only movement can ensure the normal functioning of the musculoskeletal-articular system, but not just any movement, but a correctly calculated physical load. Immobility, complete or partial, is one of the most dreaded problems of old age, and gymnastics is a great way to avoid it.
However, gymnastics for the elderly is necessary not only to maintain the musculoskeletal system in working order. Dosed exercise for the cardiovascular system is equally important. Diseases of the heart and blood vessels are the main enemy of an elderly person. These diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, and any cardiologist will say that one of the reasons for such a prevalence of coronary diseases is physical inactivity, a real scourge of modern people of pre-retirement and retirement age.
Unfortunately, the characteristic feature of an elderly person is the presence of one or even several chronic diseases. This is not a reason to give up gymnastics for the elderly, but excessive physical activity in this state can be unsafe. The best way out in such a situation is a personal fitness trainer, trained in the field of physiotherapy exercises and cardiac rehabilitation. If it is not possible to work with a personal trainer, then gymnastics in a group will be most suitable. The group should be selected from people of approximately the same age and with similar diseases in order to be able to develop the most adequate program.
Another benefit of group gymnastics for the elderly is that people get the communication they often lack. It's no secret that one of the problems of old age is the problem of poor communication. Younger family members are usually preoccupied with their own affairs, and the time they can devote to their elderly relatives is usually very short. A person who is accustomed to leading an active social life before retirement feels like a fish thrown out of the water without the usual worries and familiar communication. Sports activities in a group, thus, contribute to the vigor not only of the body, but also of the spirit.
Old age doesn't have to be a sentence. World experience shows that if people of age receive good medical care, if they do not neglect gymnastics for the elderly, try to eat right and spend enough time in the fresh air, then they can live quite happily for many years, enjoying life, and not suffering from diseases, and not considering themselves a burden to relatives.
