Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Benatex is a local contraceptive medicine. It has a spermicidal effect, in addition, it has antiseptic, antifungal, antiprotozoal properties, inactivates the Herpes simplex virus.
Benzalkonium chloride is active against gram-positive (including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.), Gram-negative (including Proteus spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella spp., Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and anaerobic bacteria.
Benatex is also active against bacterial strains that exhibit resistance to antibiotics and other chemotherapeutic drugs; inhibits hyaluronidase and plasmacoagulase of staphylococci.
The spermatocidal effect of benzalkonium chloride is based on the ability to damage the membranes of spermatozoa (at the beginning of the flagella, later on the head). This leads to the impossibility of fertilization of the egg by the damaged sperm. After the introduction of the gel, suppository or tablet, the effect develops in 3, 5 and 8-10 minutes, respectively.
Benatex is active in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (including gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, chlamydia). It has no effect on the hormonal cycle and the normal microflora of the vagina (including the Dederlein stick).
Pharmacokinetics
With intravaginal administration, Benatex is practically not absorbed, the drug is removed with normal physiological secretions and simple washing with water.
Indications for use
Benatex is used for local contraception in women of childbearing age in the following cases:
- the presence of contraindications to the use of intrauterine or oral contraceptives;
- skipping or being late in taking constantly taken oral contraceptives;
- the need for occasional protection from pregnancy;
- postpartum period;
- period after termination of pregnancy;
- lactation period;
- premenopausal period.
In addition, the drug can be used to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
Contraindications
- irritation and ulceration of the vaginal mucosa and cervix;
- colpitis;
- hypersensitivity to drug components.
Benatex, instructions for use: method and dosage
Benatex is used intravaginally. The drug should be injected into the vagina in the supine position 5-10 minutes before intercourse.
The gel must be injected using a dispenser-applicator: install the dispenser at the end of the tube, fill it completely (up to the stop of the piston or up to the annular mark), disconnect from the tube and insert into the vagina, slowly pressing the plunger, and then remove the dispenser. The drug takes effect after 3 minutes, its effectiveness lasts for 6 hours.
Tablets and suppositories Benatex should be freed from the contour package before administration.
In the form of tablets, the drug begins to act in 10 minutes, the duration of action is 3 hours, in the form of suppositories it begins to act in 5 minutes, remains effective for 4 hours.
One serving of gel, or 1 tablet, or 1 suppository is designed for one sexual intercourse.
In case of repeated intercourse, it is imperative to introduce a new portion of the gel / new tablet / new suppository.
The frequency of use is determined by the frequency of intercourse and the tolerability of the drug.
Side effects
Due to the low systemic absorption of benzalkonium chloride, the development of side effects is unlikely.
In some cases, allergic reactions occur. Itching and burning in the vagina and / or penis of the partner, contact dermatitis, painful urination are possible.
Overdose
There is no information.
special instructions
Benatex can be used in conjunction with a condom, intrauterine device or vaginal diaphragm.
To increase the effectiveness of the drug, you should strictly adhere to the recommendations for its use.
After intercourse, vaginal use of hygiene products (douching, irrigation or washing with soapy water) is not recommended in order to avoid the loss of the contraceptive effect, since soap destroys the active substance of the drug. An external toilet of the genitals is possible 2 hours before sexual intercourse and within 2 hours after it, but only with clean water.
Similarly, within 2 hours after using the drug, you can not take a bath, swim in the pool, sea and other bodies of water.
If it is necessary to treat vaginal diseases and / or the use of other intravaginal drugs, it is possible to start or resume contraception with Benatex only after the end of the therapeutic course.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Benatex is a contraceptive drug, and therefore is not used during pregnancy. If conception occurred against the background of contraception with benzalkonium chloride, its effect on the course of pregnancy has not been established.
Benzalkonium chloride is not released during lactation, so the drug can be used while breastfeeding.
Drug interactions
Any drug for intravaginal use can reduce the local spermicidal effect of benzalkonium chloride. The same goes for soaps and solutions containing it.
Iodine solutions (including 0.1% iodonate solution) inactivate Benatex.

Some women point out that Benatex, unlike hormonal drugs, does not provide 100% protection against pregnancy. Also, a disadvantage is the development of burning and itching, as well as the fact that the product is poorly washed out.
