Dekaris is an anthelmintic drug.

Release form and composition

Decaris is produced in the form of tablets: flat, round, with a chamfer; 50 mg: light orange, with a “+” mark on one side, with a slight apricot smell (2 pcs. In blisters, 1 package in a cardboard box); 150 mg: almost white, with the inscription "DECARIS 150" on one side (1 pc. In blisters, 1 package in a cardboard box).

The active ingredient is a part of 1 tablet: levamisole - 50 or 150 mg (levamisole hydrochloride - 59 or 177 mg (respectively)).

Auxiliary components that make up the tablets:

  • 50 mg: sodium saccharinate, corn starch, apricot flavor, povidone, magnesium stearate, talc, sunset yellow (E110);
  • 150 mg: povidone, corn starch, lactose monohydrate, talc, sucrose, magnesium stearate.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

The active component of Decaris is levamisole, which is classified as an anthelmintic agent. It acts on ganglion-like formations of nematodes, causing depolarizing neuromuscular paralysis of the muscle membranes of helminths. Also, the drug inhibits the activity of fumarate dehydrogenase and blocks the action of succinate dehydrogenase, which leads to disorders of bioenergetic processes in parasites. This promotes the removal of paralyzed nematodes from the body with the help of normal intestinal motility within 24 hours after taking Decaris.

Also, the drug has an immunomodulatory effect, which is expressed in increased production of antibodies to antigens and T-cell response, increased activity of T-lymphocytes, improved functions of neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages (adhesion, chemotaxis, phagocytosis).

Pharmacokinetics

When taken orally, levamisole at a dose of 50 mg is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract very quickly. The maximum level in the blood plasma is recorded approximately 1.5-2 hours after taking the drug. Levamisole is extensively metabolized in the liver with the formation of the main metabolites - n-hydroxy-levamisole and its glucuronide.

The half-life of a substance from the body is 3–6 hours. It is excreted unchanged through the kidneys (less than 5% of the dose taken) and with feces (less than 0.2% of the dose taken).

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Dekaris is prescribed for infection with helminths Ascaris lumbrocoides, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator Americanus.

Contraindications

  • Agranulocytosis associated with the use of drugs (history);
  • Age up to 3 years;
  • Lactation period (breastfeeding);
  • Hypersensitivity to drug components.

Children are not prescribed Dekaris tablets at a dose of 150 mg.

The drug should be taken with caution in case of inhibition of bone marrow hematopoiesis and in patients with hepatic and / or renal insufficiency.

Instructions for the use of Decaris: method and dosage

Decaris should be taken orally, after a meal in the evening, with a little water. There is no need for a special diet or laxatives.

The drug is taken once. Adults are usually prescribed 1 tablet of 150 mg. Children should take the drug based on age and weight:

  • 3-6 years (from 10 to 20 kg) - 0.5-1 tablet of 50 mg (25-50 mg);
  • 6-10 years old (from 20 to 30 kg) - 1-1.5 tablets of 50 mg (50-75 mg);
  • 10-14 years old (from 30 to 40 kg) - 1.5-2 tablets of 50 mg each (75-100 mg).

If necessary, after 1-2 weeks, Decaris can be taken again.

Side effects

During therapy, it is possible that side effects such as palpitations, headache, dizziness, insomnia, convulsions, dyspeptic symptoms (vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain) develop.

There are also reports of the development in 2-5 weeks after taking the drug of disorders of the central nervous system in the form of encephalopathy and allergic reactions manifested as a skin rash.

In most cases, these phenomena are reversible. The prognosis is improved by early use of glucocorticosteroids.

The connection of these side effects with taking Decaris is not entirely convincing, but when taking the drug in large doses or with prolonged treatment, leukopenia, tremor, and agranulocytosis may develop.

Overdose

When taking a large dose of Decaris (more than 600 mg), symptoms of intoxication such as dizziness, headache, blurred consciousness, drowsiness, seizures, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea may occur.

If the overdose was accidental, and the drug was taken relatively recently, it is recommended to perform gastric lavage. It is necessary to conduct regular monitoring of vital body functions and prescribe symptomatic therapy. If signs of anticholinesterase action occur, atropine may be administered.

special instructions

Do not consume alcoholic beverages 24 hours after using the drug.

There is no sufficient evidence that levamisole, used as an anthelmintic agent, inhibits the nervous system.

When taking Decaris, a mild, transient dizziness may occur, which must be taken into account when driving and working with complex mechanisms.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

The appointment of Decaris during pregnancy is permissible only in cases where the intended benefits of therapy for the mother are more significant than the potential risks to the fetus.

If necessary, treatment with the drug during lactation is considered appropriate to stop breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

It is impossible to simultaneously use Decaris with lipophilic drugs (carbon tetrachloride, henopodium oil, tetrachlorethylene, ether or chloroform), since this combination may increase its toxicity.

With the simultaneous administration of levamisole with alcoholic beverages, disulfiram-like phenomena can be observed.

Care must be taken when using Decaris with medicines that affect blood formation.

The prothrombin time may increase with the simultaneous administration of levamisole with coumarin-like anticoagulants, in connection with which it is necessary to adjust the dose of the oral anticoagulant.

Decaris can increase the level of phenytoin in the blood, so it should be monitored while using these drugs.

Analogs

Analogs of Decaris are: Levamisole, Vermox, Wormin, Biltricid, Helmintox, Nemozol, Pirantel, Piperazine, Medamin, Mebendazole, Telmox, Pumpkin seeds, Tansy flowers.

Terms and conditions of storage

Keep out of reach of children at a temperature of 15-30 ° C.

The shelf life is 5 years.

Dispensed by prescription.

Reviews about Decaris

Numerous reviews about Decaris often have almost the opposite direction. Many patients who have been prescribed pills as a remedy for worms describe pronounced side effects such as skin rashes, headaches, dizziness, severe nausea and vomiting, and an unpleasant odor. For this reason, some parents are afraid to give Decaris to children. However, there are no complaints about the lack of effectiveness of the drug in the treatment of helminthic invasions in patients of both children and adults.

Among patients, it is vigorously discussed how worms are removed after drug therapy. Helminths killed by muscle paralysis are excreted from the body in a natural way within 24 hours along with feces. Decaris destroys almost all known types of worms: whipworm, ascaris, pinworms, toxocar, trichinella.

Most doctors speak favorably about Decaris. Some of them take it themselves and note its good tolerance. According to experts, the side effects of the drug can be leveled by eliminating the intoxication of the body. For this, laxatives are taken to prevent difficulties with emptying the intestines.

Price for Decaris in pharmacies

The approximate price for Dekaris in tablets of 50 mg in pharmacies is 69–78 rubles (the package includes 2 tablets). You can buy the drug in a dosage of 150 mg for 73–82 rubles (for 1 tablet).
