Folacin is a drug that stimulates hematopoiesis and replenishes the lack of folic acid in the body. It is produced in the form of yellow flat-cylindrical tablets with a chamfer or risk on one side.

Folacin is a drug that stimulates hematopoiesis and replenishes the lack of folic acid in the body

Folic acid is a vitamin of group B. In the body, it is converted into tetrahydrofolic acid - a coenzyme necessary for the full formation of normoblasts and the maturation of megaloblasts, as well as participating in various metabolic processes. With a lack of folic acid in the body, a megaloblastic type of blood formation develops. Folic acid is also involved in the synthesis of amino acids (including glycine, serine and methionine), pyrimidines, purines, nucleic acids, in the exchange of histidine and choline, and stimulates erythropoiesis. During pregnancy, it protects the fetus from damaging and teratogenic factors. Promotes the proper maturation and functioning of the placenta.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, folic acid combines with a specific glycoprotein (internal Castle factor) in the stomach and is completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Under the action of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase in the presence of ascorbic acid, it is deposited and metabolized to form tetrahydrofolic acid in the liver. It binds almost completely to plasma proteins.

Folic acid passes into breast milk and through the placenta. The maximum concentration in the blood is reached within 30-60 minutes after consumption. If the taken dose exceeds the required daily dose, it is excreted by the kidneys, both in the form of metabolites and unchanged.

Indications for the use of the drug Folacin

According to the instructions, Folacin is used to:

  • treatment and prevention of folic acid deficiency in the presence of inadequate or unbalanced nutrition;
  • treatment and prevention of anemia against the background of a lack of folic acid: leukopenia and anemia, which are caused by ionizing radiation and drugs, hyperchromic anemia, post-resection anemia, megaloblastic anemia, anemias associated with malabsorption syndrome, sprue and diseases of the small intestine, sideroblastic anemia in the elderly;
  • prevention of the development of neural tube defects in the fetus.

Folacin is used for long-term treatment with folic acid antagonists (trimethoprim, a combination of sulfamethoxazole, methotrexate), anticonvulsants (phenobarbital, primidone, phenytoin).

Folacin is also used during pregnancy and lactation for the treatment and prevention of anemia.

Contraindications to use

According to the instructions, Folacin is contraindicated for:

  • pernicious anemia;
  • hypersensitivity to any component of the drug;
  • cobalamin deficiency;
  • malignant neoplasms.

Side effects

According to reviews, Folacin can cause allergic reactions: skin rashes, itching, erythema, bronchospasm. Also, according to reviews of Folacin, nausea, anorexia, bitterness in the mouth and bloating can be observed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Interaction with other drugs

The absorption of folic acid is reduced with simultaneous use with tetracyclines, polymyxins, neomycin and chloramphenicol.

With the simultaneous use of Folacin reduces the effects of ethanol, methotrexate, chloramphenicol, primidone, phenytoin, glutethimide and cycloserine, sulfasalazine, contraceptives for internal use.

Doses and method of administration

Folacin is taken internally.

Folacin is taken during pregnancy to prevent the development of neural tube defects in the fetus
Folacin is taken during pregnancy to prevent the development of neural tube defects in the fetus

For the prevention of megaloblastic anemia caused by a lack of folic acid in the body, 2.5 milligrams of Folacin are used per day for four months, for treatment - 5 milligrams per day.

For the treatment and prevention of macrocytic anemia in the presence of inadequate or unbalanced nutrition, intestinal inflammation and malabsorption, Folacin is taken 15 milligrams per day.

Folacin is taken during pregnancy to prevent the development of neural tube defects in the fetus. It should be consumed at 2.5 milligrams for the four weeks prior to the intended pregnancy and throughout the first trimester of pregnancy.

special instructions

Patients on hemodialysis should be given higher doses of folic acid.

With prolonged use of Folacin, especially in higher doses, the concentration of cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) in the blood may decrease, therefore, if it is necessary to take folic acid for a long time, the use of vitamin B12 is also prescribed.
