The creator of Vishnevsky's ointment (Balsamic Liniment according to Vishnevsky) was the famous Soviet surgeon Alexander Vasilievich Vishnevsky. He developed this simple and effective antiseptic composition in 1927 for the treatment of purulent wounds and skin lesions associated with a high risk of infection. This drug is now considered obsolete. Does Vishnevsky's ointment really help with hemorrhoids, and if so, how to treat hemorrhoids with it?

The use of the ointment promotes healing of injuries, reduces swelling of the anorectal region, eliminates pain, prevents further proliferation of hemorrhoids. The agent has a warming effect, enhances blood flow to the inflamed area and promotes the formation of a protective film over the damaged areas, disinfects and dries the skin, accelerates the regeneration of damaged tissues. Thanks to this combination of antiseptic, local irritating and emollient effect, Vishnevsky ointment is used as one of the drugs in the complex treatment of chronic inflammation of external hemorrhoids.

The composition of Vishnevsky ointment

The three main ingredients that make up the drug give it antiseptic properties, accelerate tissue regeneration, help displace pathogenic microflora, heal cracks, and cleanse wound surfaces from purulent contents.

Xeroform - provides an antiseptic, astringent and drying effect, promotes the healing process and tissue regeneration. The antiseptic effect of the drug is to prevent the active reproduction of bacteria and their death. Antimicrobial activity is a consequence of the destruction of proteins of microorganisms. Xeroform as part of Vishnevsky's ointment has a local anesthetic effect, activates local blood circulation. As a result of protein denaturation, insoluble protein compounds albuminates are formed, a kind of protective film is formed that protects the affected tissue areas from irritants. The product has a wide spectrum of action, low toxicity, does not irritate the skin and mucous membranes.

Birch tar - stimulates blood circulation, accelerates healing and cell regeneration, has bactericidal properties, reduces swelling and tension of hemorrhoids, and leads to a decrease in the inflammatory process. The local anesthetic components of this natural remedy are effective against itching and burning.

Castor oil - activates microcirculation in the lower intestine, relieves inflammation, accelerates cell regeneration, heals erosion and cracks, eliminates itching and burning, has a softening and soothing effect, facilitating the process of defecation. The oil has a thick, viscous consistency, is able to penetrate deep into the dermis, where it warms up the tissues, helps better penetration of other liniment components into the affected tissues.

How effective is Vishnevsky's ointment in the treatment of hemorrhoids

Reviews of Vishnevsky's ointment for hemorrhoids are mostly positive. Due to the absence of side effects, this drug, when used correctly, has practically no contraindications. Restrictions in use may arise only with individual intolerance to any of the active ingredients. The drug is well tolerated by children. During pregnancy, Vishnevsky's ointment for hemorrhoids is also approved for use. The components of the drug do not penetrate into breast milk, therefore, its use is not prohibited during breastfeeding.

Despite all the positive qualities, ointment in the treatment of hemorrhoids is rarely used, since, according to doctors, it is outdated - more effective drugs with a similar effect have been created, but for self-treatment at home this remedy has not lost its relevance.

How to use Vishnevsky ointment for hemorrhoids

The drug has a local irritating effect, therefore it is not used in the acute phase of the disease.

Treatment begins with the treatment of the affected area with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. To do this, several crystals of potassium permanganate are diluted in a glass of water, then the solution is filtered through several layers of gauze. Potassium permanganate is an excellent antiseptic, promotes healing of cracks and erosion, reduces pain and swelling, and soothes burning. Sterile wipes are moistened in solution and applied to the inflamed hemorrhoidal formations. Such procedures are carried out 2-4 times a day. During the first days of an exacerbation of the disease, only lotions with a solution of potassium permanganate should be used. After three days, you can start treatment with balsamic liniment.

Instructions for using ointment for hemorrhoids:

  1. Before using liniment, the perianal area is treated with a weak solution of soda or potassium permanganate. You can prepare a warm sitz bath with potassium permanganate.
  2. Ointment is applied to a wide strip of sterile gauze, gauze strips are applied to the affected areas. Such a compress is done three times a day, changing the dressings soaked in the ointment for new ones every 1-2 hours, or they keep it continuously for two days, changing every twelve hours.

If there are no strong painful manifestations, the drug can be applied to the affected areas directly, without resorting to compresses. However, it should be borne in mind that liniment has a dark color and a strong unpleasant odor, therefore it stains the laundry. To avoid this, when applying it, use sanitary napkins.
