Tantum Verde is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for topical use in dentistry and ENT practice.
Release form and composition
- lozenges: square, with a depression in the center, translucent, green, with a characteristic mint-lemon odor (each tablet is individually wrapped in waxed paper, 10 pieces in a double-layer aluminum foil wrapper, 2 aluminum wrappers in a cardboard box);
- 0.15% solution for topical application: transparent, green, with a mint smell [120 ml in glass bottles, 1 bottle in a cardboard box complete with a graduated polypropylene cup (15 and 30 ml)];
- dosed spray for topical use: colorless transparent liquid with a characteristic mint odor [30 ml (176 doses) each in polyethylene bottles with a pump and a push device with a folding cannula, 1 bottle in a cardboard box].
The active substance of Tantum Verde: benzalkonium hydrochloride, its content in 1 tablet is 3 mg, in 1 ml of solution - 1.5 mg, in 1 spray dose - 0.255 mg.
Auxiliary components of the tablets: citric acid monohydrate, racementol, isomaltose, aspartame, indigo carmine (E132) and quinoline yellow (E104) dyes, lemon and mint flavors.
Auxiliary components of the solution: methyl parahydroxybenzoate, glycerol, ethanol 96%, sodium bicarbonate, saccharin, polysorbate 20, patented blue dye 85% (E131), quinoline yellow dye 70% (E104), menthol flavor, purified water.
Auxiliary components of the spray: glycerol, ethanol 96%, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, saccharin, polysorbate 20, menthol flavor, sodium bicarbonate, purified water.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Benzydamine belongs to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and is part of the indazole group. It is characterized by a local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, and is also an antiseptic, effective against a wide range of microorganisms.
Tantum Verde stabilizes cell membranes and inhibits the production of prostaglandins. Benzydamine has an antibacterial and specific antimicrobial effect due to the rapid penetration of microorganisms through the membranes, which leads to damage to cellular structures, metabolic disorders and cell lysis.
Tantum Verde has antifungal effect on diseases caused by Candida albicans. Benzydamine causes changes in the metabolic chains of mycetes and the cell walls of fungi of a structural nature. This prevents their reproduction, therefore, the appointment of benzydamine is recommended for inflammatory processes in the oral cavity, including diseases of infectious etiology.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, the absorption process of benzydamine through the mucous membranes proceeds quickly, so the substance penetrates well into the inflamed tissues.
Tantum Verde is excreted mainly through the kidneys and intestines in the form of conjugation products or metabolites. Dosage forms of the drug intended for topical use do not have a systemic effect and do not penetrate into breast milk.
Indications for use
Tantum Verde is used to treat the following inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, pharynx and throat:
- periodontal disease;
- conditions after treatment and tooth extraction;
- calculous inflammation of the salivary glands;
- laryngitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, tonsillitis;
- conditions after surgical interventions and injuries (including after tonsillectomy, jaw fractures);
- glossitis, gingivitis, stomatitis (including after radiation and chemotherapy);
- candidiasis (as part of combination therapy).
Contraindications
- phenylketonuria (for tablets);
- children under 3 years old - for tablets and spray, up to 12 years old - for topical solution;
- hypersensitivity to drug components.
Instructions for use of Tantum Verde: method and dosage
Lozenges should be kept in the mouth until they are completely dissolved. Adults (including the elderly) and children over 3 years old are prescribed 1 pc. 3-4 times a day.
Topical solution is prescribed for rinsing the mouth and throat. In its pure form, the drug is used to treat inflammatory processes, in diluted form (1: 1 with water, that is, mix 15 ml of solution in a measuring cup with 15 ml of water) - for daily hygienic rinsing of the mouth and throat. Adults (including the elderly) and children over 12 years of age are prescribed 15 ml per procedure 2-3 times a day.
Spray for topical use for adults, including the elderly, is prescribed 4–8 doses every 1.5–3 hours.
Recommended doses of Tantum Verde spray for children:
- 6–12 years old - 4 doses every 1.5–3 hours;
- 3-6 years - 1-4 doses (1 dose for every 4 kg of body weight) every 1.5-3 hours.
Duration of treatment:
- inflammatory diseases of the mouth, pharynx and throat - 4-15 days;
- odonto-dental pathology - 6–25 days;
- conditions after injuries and surgical interventions (when using solution and spray) - 4-7 days.
Side effects
- allergic reactions: skin rashes;
- local reactions: dry mouth, burning sensation and numbness in the mouth;
- from the respiratory system: very rarely - laryngospasm.
Overdose
There is currently no information on overdose and its consequences.
special instructions
Avoid contact with Tantum Verde spray in eyes.
If the solution causes a burning sensation in the mouth, it should be diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio (by adding 15 ml of water to a glass).
According to the instructions, Tantum Verde does not negatively affect the ability to perform potentially hazardous work and drive vehicles.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is allowed to prescribe Tantum Verde during pregnancy and breastfeeding strictly according to indications.
Pediatric use
Contraindications to the use of Tantum Verde for children: in the form of tablets and spray - up to 3 years old, in the form of a solution for topical use - up to 12 years old.
Drug interactions
Cases of clinically significant interactions with the simultaneous use of other drugs have not been established.
