Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Lavacol is a powerful laxative drug, the combined composition of which is designed to completely remove intestinal contents and restore water-electrolyte metabolism caused by frequent bowel movements.
The laxative effect is provided by the active ingredient - macrogol. Its mechanism of action is due to the attraction and retention of water, as a result of which it swells and grows in size. This contributes to a significant increase in the volume of intestinal contents and stimulation of peristalsis, ensuring the rapid advancement of feces and their evacuation outside. The therapeutic effect occurs exclusively in the intestinal lumen, therefore, the drug is not absorbed into the systemic circulation, it is excreted from the body unchanged. It should be noted that the drug does not cause dehydration, since the macrogol uses the liquid that came in while taking it to swell, without absorbing water from the stomach and intestines. Therefore, to ensure the mechanism of action, strict adherence to the recommendations for the use of Lavacol in terms of dissolving the powder in a certain amount of water is required.
When the salts contained in the preparation are dissolved, an electrolyte solution is formed, which prevents the disturbance of the water-electrolyte balance and dehydration of the body.
When compared with other methods and means of forced bowel cleansing, the advantage of Lavacol is the simultaneous osmotic laxative effect, which causes complete cleansing of all parts of the intestine from food and feces, and replenishing the loss of fluid and salts caused by frequent bowel movements.

According to the instructions, Lavacol is used to completely cleanse the intestines in the following conditions:
- preparation of the colon or rectum for X-ray (irrigoscopy) examination, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and other methods of endoscopic examination;

Instructions for the use of Lavacol: method and dosage
The finished solution of the drug is taken orally, in small sips, on an empty stomach (no earlier than 2 hours after a meal).
Before taking Lavacol, the contents of 1 sachet should be dissolved in 200 ml of water.
For a complete cleansing of the intestines in preparation for diagnostic studies or surgery, start taking the solution 18–20 hours before the start of the procedure. The dose of the drug is prescribed by the doctor taking into account the patient's weight, usually 1 sachet per 4 kg.
Recommended dosage:
- complete bowel cleansing: 200 ml of solution is taken at intervals of 20 minutes, the total volume is 3000 ml of solution. About 2 hours after taking the first dose of the drug, fecal matter is excreted. After each bowel movement, the next 200 ml of solution must be taken. After taking the last single dose, bowel cleansing can continue for another 2-3 hours. The application of the solution should be started on the eve of a diagnostic study or a surgical operation from 14:00 to 19:00;
- constipation in adults: 200 ml of solution once. Defecation usually occurs within 3-5 hours. In the absence of a laxative effect after 7 hours from the moment of taking the drug, an additional 200 ml of solution should be taken.
Side effects
In rare cases, against the background of the use of Lavacol, it is possible to develop side effects from the digestive system in the form of nausea, vomiting, a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea 12 hours after the end of its action.
In addition, sometimes allergic reactions can develop, including skin rashes, hives, and edema.
These undesirable phenomena do not require special treatment, after 1–2 days the patient's condition usually returns to normal.

Reviews about Lavacole
Reviews about Lavacol are mostly positive. Patients note the mild effect of the drug, effectiveness in preparation for diagnostic studies of the colon and rectum, complete cleansing of the intestines as the initial stage of diet therapy or therapeutic fasting. Comparing with expensive imported counterparts, many indicate a fairly tolerant taste of the solution (mineral water without gas) and the absence of side effects.
In some regions, there is a shortage of the drug on the market.
There are few reviews about insufficiently complete bowel cleansing, detected during direct diagnostics, and the subjectively unpleasant taste of the solution.
