Infusion

Infusion (infusio; synonym: infusion) - parenteral (bypassing the gastrointestinal tract) the introduction into the body of large volumes of fluid (for example, blood, drugs, blood substitutes).

Infusion types:

  • Intra-aortic (intraaortalis) - fluid is injected into the aorta; used for diagnostic purposes (for arteriography, aortography), for quick compensation of blood loss during thoracic surgery, etc.;
  • Intraarterialis - fluid is pumped into an artery; used in the treatment of terminal conditions, as well as to create a high level of drug content in the focus of the pathological process;
  • Intraperitoneal (intraperitonealis) - the introduction of fluid into the peritoneal cavity; used to prevent and treat peritonitis;
  • Intravenous (intravenosa) - fluid is injected into a venous vessel, it can be carried out by drip or jet;
  • Intraosseous (intraossea) - the introduction of fluid into the spongy substance (inner part) of the bone, most often the calcaneal tubercle is used;
  • Intrauterine (intrauterina) - fluid is injected into the uterine cavity; used for X-ray contrast studies, abortion, etc.;
  • Intramuscular (intramuscularis) - the introduction of fluid into the thickness of the muscle, mainly the gluteus maximus;
  • Intrapleural (intrapleuralis) - fluid is injected into the pleural cavity;
  • Zabolochechnoe (historical) - the introduction of a medicinal solution behind the membranes of the ovum to terminate pregnancy at a later date;
  • Drip (guttatim) - carried out using devices that provide a slow (from 40 to 60 drops per 1 minute) introduction of fluid into a muscle, vein, bone or under the skin;
  • Subcutaneous (subcutanea) - the liquid is injected into the subcutaneous fatty tissue, usually on the antero-outer surface of the thigh;
  • Jet - carried out by intermittent (with intra-arterial injection) or continuous stream, by gravity or by means of injection equipment.
