Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Fleet Phospho-soda is a saline laxative, the mechanism of action of which is based on the ability to increase water retention in the lumen of the small intestine (using osmotic processes). Due to the accumulation of fluid in the ileum, peristalsis increases and, as a result, the intestines are cleansed.
Pharmacokinetics
The drug has only a local, local effect, so there is no need for pharmacokinetic studies. Sodium phosphate is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, however, there is a slight absorption of sodium ions and phosphates, which depends on the dose taken.
Indications for use
- preparation for surgery on the colon;
- preparation for X-ray / endoscopic examination of the colon.
Contraindications
- acute inflammatory bowel disease;
- violation of the integrity of the intestine;
- intestinal obstruction (both complete and partial);
- congenital or acquired megacolon;
- abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting;
- renal failure;
- heart failure;
- age up to 15 years;
- hypersensitivity to drug components.
Instructions for the use of Fleet Phospho-soda: method and dosage
Fleet Phospho-soda is taken orally.
For administration, the contents of one bottle are dissolved in half a glass of cold water (120 ml), drunk and washed down with at least one glass of cold water.
1 bottle = 1 dose.

Typically, the drug will cause stools within 30 minutes to 6 hours after ingestion.
Morning appointment, the day before the procedure

Side effects
- from the digestive system: bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting; very rarely - single or multiple aft-like formations on the mucous membrane of the sigmoid and rectum (detected during endoscopy, have no clinical significance, disappear on their own without treatment);
- from the nervous system: headache, weakness, asthenia, dizziness;
- from the side of metabolism: in some cases in patients from risk groups - dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (for example, acidosis, hypokalemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypernatremia, hypocalcemia);
- others: allergic reactions.
Overdose
There are several cases of death in children and adults due to hyperphosphatemia with concomitant acidosis, hypernatremia and hypocalcemia after high doses of Fleet Phospho-soda.
Cases of complete recovery after an accidental overdose are also described, including in a patient who took a 6-fold dose of the drug.
special instructions
Fleet Phosphate Soda is not intended to treat constipation.
Patients should be warned about possible frequent and loose stools.
The drug should be used with caution by the elderly, debilitated patients, patients with heart disease, reduced kidney function and colostomy, as well as those on a diet low in salt. These patients are at risk of developing hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, dehydration associated with hypernatremia / acidosis.
In some cases, during endoscopy on the mucous membrane of the rectum and sigmoid colon, aft-like changes were found: discrete formations of an inflammatory nature, lymphoid follicles or changes caused by taking the drug. These phenomena have no clinical significance, disappear on their own and do not require special treatment.
In rare cases, patients have a prolongation of the QT interval on the electrocardiogram due to electrolyte imbalance such as hypokalemia or hypocalcemia.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
According to the instructions, Fleet Phospho-soda does not affect the speed of reactions and the ability to concentrate, therefore, it does not require refraining from driving and performing work with potentially dangerous consequences.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
There is insufficient data on the absence of the toxic effect of the drug on the fetus, therefore, Fleet Phospho-soda is contraindicated for pregnant women.
Sodium phosphate passes into breast milk, and therefore breastfeeding women need to stop breastfeeding while taking the drug and within 24 hours after taking the last dose.
Pediatric use
The drug is contraindicated in children under 15 years of age.
With impaired renal function
- renal failure - the drug is contraindicated;
- reduced renal function - the drug should be used with caution.
Use in the elderly
In old age, Fleet Phospho-soda must be used with caution.
Drug interactions
Careful monitoring of the patient's condition is required in the case of the simultaneous use of calcium channel blockers, diuretics, lithium preparations and other drugs that can affect the level of electrolytes, since there is a risk of hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and dehydration against the background of acidosis / hypernatremia.
Fleet Phospho-soda can delay or prevent the absorption of other drugs taken simultaneously in the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore it is possible to reduce or completely eliminate the effect of regularly used drugs, including oral contraceptives, antibacterial, hypoglycemic and antiepileptic drugs.

The analogues of Fleet Phospho-soda are: Fortrans, Defenorm, Fleet Redi-tu-yuz enema, artificial Karlovy Vary salt, Endofalk, Normacol.
