Castor oil is a herbal laxative.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - oil for oral administration: colorless or yellowish transparent liquid of a viscous and thick consistency (30 or 50 ml in glass bottles).
The active substance is castor oil.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Castor oil is a laxative. When taken orally, the drug is cleaved by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid. This substance stimulates the irritation of the intestinal receptors in all its parts and the reflex activation of peristalsis. The laxative effect is usually observed 5-6 hours after ingestion. Also, the use of the drug leads to a reflex contraction of the muscles of the uterus.
Pharmacokinetics
The pharmacokinetics of Castor oil remains poorly understood.
Indications for use
The use of oil is indicated for constipation and to stimulate labor.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy period;
- Hypersensitivity.
The use of Castor oil is contraindicated in case of poisoning with male fern extract, as well as benzene, phosphorus and other fat-soluble substances.
Instructions for the use of Castor oil: method and dosage
Castor oil is taken orally for constipation.
Recommended dosage:
- Adults - 1-2 tablespoons;
- Children - 1 teaspoon, dessert or tablespoon.
In obstetric practice, to stimulate the weak activity of the uterus, it is recommended to take 2 tablespoons and 1 dessert spoon in combination with pituitrin, quinine and other means.
Side effects
The use of the drug can cause a side effect in the form of the development of allergic reactions.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms are manifested when taking Castor oil at a dose of more than 7 g / kg of body weight. The most typical of them are dizziness, fainting, hallucinations, renal dysfunction, sharp spastic pain in the abdomen, diarrhea.
Specific antidotes include loperamide and atropine sulfate. To eliminate signs of an overdose, the drug is canceled and symptomatic therapy is prescribed, designed to eliminate the disturbances in the body's work. It is also recommended to provide replacement for the loss of electrolytes and fluid (preferably a combination of intravenous and oral administration). If the patient has neurotoxic effects, diazepam should be given at a dose of 5-10 mg intravenously.
special instructions
The laxative effect of the drug occurs 5-6 hours after ingestion.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
Castor oil treatment does not affect the patient's ability to perform potentially hazardous work requiring increased concentration and immediate psychomotor reactions (driving, working with moving machinery).
Application during pregnancy and lactation
According to the instructions, Castor oil is contraindicated in pregnancy. When administered during lactation, it is necessary to stop breastfeeding.
Pediatric use
The drug is used only in children over 12 years old, which is due to the increased sensitivity of the intestines at a younger age to the effects of irritating substances and an increased risk of dehydration.
Drug interactions
No clinically significant interaction of the oil with other drugs has been established.
Analogs
Analogs of Castor oil are: Agiolax, Glaxenna, Guttalax, Bisacodyl, Dulcolax, Mucofalk, Laxigal, Isafenin, Slabilen, Senade, Slabikap, Tisasen, Regulax, Pikoprep, Fibralax.
Terms and conditions of storage
Store in a cool, dark place. Keep out of the reach of children.
Terms of dispensing from pharmacies
Available without a prescription.
Reviews of Castor Oil
As evidenced by reviews, Castor oil helps with constipation quickly and effectively. Also, patients claim that a cheap drug ensures the removal of toxins and toxins accumulated in it from the intestines, and therefore its use is permissible for weight loss purposes.
Some patients mention that Castor oil in combination with cognac allows you to remove all helminths in the shortest possible time. To do this, on an empty stomach, you need to drink 50 g of brandy, which paralyze the worms, preventing them from fixing in the intestinal walls, and then take 50 g of this drug, which has a laxative effect and provides intestinal cleansing. The procedures continue until there are no parasites in the stool. It is recommended to carry out such cleaning 2 times a year.
Price for Castor oil in pharmacies
On average, the price of Castor oil for oral administration in most pharmacies is 52–96 rubles (depending on the volume of the bottle).
