Magnesium sulfate is a drug, the therapeutic effect of which depends on the method of administration.

So, when taken orally, magnesium sulfate has a laxative and choleretic effect.

The laxative effect of the drug is due to its poor absorption, which leads to the creation of high osmotic pressure in the intestine, which entails the accumulation of water, dilution of the intestinal contents and, as a result, increased peristalsis.

The choleretic effect of magnesium sulfate is explained by its reflex effect on the mucous membrane of the duodenum.

This remedy is an antidote for poisoning with heavy metal salts.

Magnesium sulfate begins to act in 0.5-3 hours after ingestion, the therapeutic effect lasts for 4-6 hours.

Intravenous and intramuscular administration of magnesium sulfate has a diuretic, vasodilator, antiarrhythmic, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic and sedative effect. Parenteral administration of large doses of the drug can cause tocolytic (prevents premature birth), hypnotic, curariform (inhibits neuromuscular transmission) and narcotic effect of the drug.

The use of magnesium sulfate allows you to reduce the excitability of the respiratory center, reduce blood pressure, which is due to the sedative properties of the drug, and increase urination.

After intravenous administration, the drug begins to act almost instantly, maintaining its therapeutic effect for half an hour. After intramuscular administration of magnesium sulfate begins to act in 60 minutes and continues for the next 3-4 hours.

Indications for the use of Magnesium sulfate

Magnesium sulfate powder, which is intended for the preparation of a suspension or solution for oral administration, is prescribed for: constipation, cholecystitis (an acute inflammatory process in the gallbladder), cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts), dyspenia of the gallbladder (abnormalities in contraction), duodenal intubation, purification intestines before diagnostic procedures.

Magnesium sulfate in ampoules containing a solution for intramuscular and intravenous administration is used for:

• hypomagnesemia;
• convulsions with gestosis (disorder of body systems during pregnancy);
• the threat of premature birth;
• arterial hypertension;
• epileptic syndrome;
• encephalopathy (non-inflammatory brain diseases);
• eclampsia (critically high blood pressure in pregnant women or women in labor);
• retention of urine.

Magnesium sulfate in any dosage form is effective for poisoning with such heavy metal salts as arsenic, tetraethyl lead, mercury.

Contraindications

Oral administration of magnesium sulfate is not recommended by the instruction for rectal bleeding, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, dehydration, hypermagnesemia.

Magnesium sulfate in ampoules for parenteral use is contraindicated in case of depression of the respiratory center, arterial hypotension, severe bradycardia, AV blockade. Do not use the drug 2 hours before delivery.

Magnesium sulfate in any dosage form is not prescribed for chronic renal failure and hypersensitivity to the drug.

Instructions for the use of Magnesium sulfate

Before ingestion of magnesium sulfate powder is dissolved in 100 ml of slightly heated water. To obtain a laxative effect, the contents of one packet (20-30 g) are used as a single dose for adults, and for children, the amount of powder in grams should correspond to the child's age in years.

Magnesium sulfate 20-25% solution is taken orally if necessary to obtain a choleretic effect - 3 times a day, 15 ml. Duodenal intubation involves the introduction of a 10% (100 ml) or 25% (50 ml) warm solution through a tube. To cleanse the stomach of heavy metal salts, either washing with a 1% solution is carried out, or the patient takes 20-25 g of magnesium sulfate powder dissolved in 200 ml of water inside. The daily dose of the drug for adults should not exceed 40 g of the drug.

Magnesium sulfate in ampoules is intended for parenteral administration, which should be carried out slowly - during the first three minutes, no more than 3 ml should be injected. Usually, the drug is used 1-2 times a day, 5-20 ml, using a 20-25% solution. The duration of treatment is 2-3 weeks.

To cleanse the body of heavy metal salts, magnesium sulfate, the instruction recommends to be administered intravenously in the form of a 5-10% solution of 5-10 ml.

The relief of seizures in children involves intramuscular administration of the drug, at the rate of 20-40 mg per kg.

Side effects

Magnesium sulfate can provoke such undesirable body reactions as:

• exacerbation of diseases of the digestive tract, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, flatulence, thirst, in case of renal failure - signs of hypermagnesemia (dizziness);
• electrolyte imbalance, which manifests itself in the form of seizures, arrhythmias, confusion, asthenia, increased fatigue.

Hypermangemia at the initial stage can be expressed by a decrease in blood pressure, headache, shortness of breath, weakness, vomiting, nausea, blurred speech, bradycardia, and sudden flushes of blood to the face.

Excessive concentration of magnesium in the blood serum has the following symptoms: depression of the respiratory center, loss of deep tendon reflexes, cardiac conduction disturbances, cardiac arrest, anxiety, increased sweating, increased urine production, deep sedation (depression of consciousness), uterine atony (a sharp decrease in tone and loss of contractile abilities of muscles).

Additional Information

The instruction recommends storing magnesium sulfate at room temperature, the fulfillment of this condition will allow the drug to remain usable for 5 years.
