Latin name: Garasone
ATX code: S01CA05
Active ingredient: betamethasone (betamethasone), gentamicin (gentamicin)
Manufacturer: Schering-Plow Labo N. V. (Schering-Plow Labo NV) (Belgium)
Description and photo update: 2019-26-08
Garazon is a combined preparation with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action for local use in ENT practice and ophthalmology.
Release form and composition
The drug is produced in the form of eye and ear drops (5 ml each in polyethylene dropper bottles; 1 bottle in a cardboard box and instructions for use of Garazon).
The composition of 1 ml drops contains active substances:
- Betamethasone (in the form of betamethasone sodium phosphate) - 1 mg;
- Gentamicin (as gentamicin sulfate) 3 mg
Auxiliary components: purified water, sodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium chloride, sodium citrate dihydrate, sodium borate, disodium edetate, benzalkonium chloride (as a preservative).
Pharmacological properties
Garazon is a two-component drug used locally in ophthalmology and otolaryngology, the action of which is due to its active substances:
- gentamicin (as gentamicin sulfate): a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group that has a bactericidal effect. Exhibits activity against coagulase-positive (coagulase-positive) and coagulase-negative (coagulase-negative) staphylococci (including Staphylococcus aureus), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, indole-positive and indole-negative species of Prote colus, Escherichia ES - Entertia group, Escherichia species - Entertia), Citrobacter, Shigella, Salmonella, Neisseria (in particular Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and Moraxella species (including Moraxella lacunata);
- betamethasone (in the form of betamethasone disodium phosphate): GCS (glucocorticosteroid) of local anti-inflammatory action, suppressing cellular and fibrinous exudation, normalizing increased capillary permeability. These effects help to reduce edema, local flushing and effusion. In the case of allergic or traumatic damage to the cornea, GCS inhibits the proliferation of fibroblasts and post-inflammatory neovascularization of the cornea, thus maintaining its transparency.
Indications for use
- Keratoconjunctivitis and secondarily infected conjunctivitis;
- Staphylococcal blepharoconjunctivitis;
- Keratitis;
- Blepharitis;
- Dacryocystitis;
- Injuries to the anterior part of the eye due to chemical and thermal burns, exposure to radiation, foreign bodies, as well as in the postoperative period;
- Episcleritis;
- Meibomite (internal barley);
- Eczema of the external auditory canal, otitis externa (acute and chronic).
Contraindications
- Viral diseases of the conjunctiva and cornea (for example, with chickenpox);
- Keratitis caused by the herpes simplex virus (treelike keratitis);
- Fungal or mycobacterial infections of the ear or eye;
- Conditions accompanied by thinning of the sclera and cornea (for example, after removal of a foreign body from the cornea);
- Trachoma;
- Perforation or absence of the tympanic membrane;
- Age under 8;
- Pregnancy (unless the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus) and lactation (due to lack of information);
- Hypersensitivity to drug components.
Wearing soft contact lenses during treatment is not recommended (due to the presence of benzalkonium chloride in Garazone).
Drops should be used with caution in patients with open-angle glaucoma, high myopia, with a family history of diabetes mellitus and infections caused by the herpes simplex virus.
Garazon, instructions for use: method and dosage
When treating eye diseases, the doctor determines the dosage individually. As a rule, 1-2 drops are instilled 3-4 times a day into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye. The frequency of application of Garazon in the acute stage can be increased to 2 drops every 1-2 hours. After improvement, the frequency of application is reduced. The total duration of local treatment is determined by the nature and severity of the disease. In the absence of a therapeutic effect within 14 days, further use of Garazon is impractical.
In the treatment of ear diseases, the external auditory canal should be cleaned before instilling Garazon. The recommended initial dose is 3-4 drops, the frequency of application is 2-4 times a day. The patient should lie on his side with the affected ear facing up, after instilling the solution to ensure the penetration of the drug into the ear canal, it is necessary to remain in this position for a few more minutes.
With a decrease in the severity of inflammatory phenomena, the dosage is gradually reduced. The therapy is stopped after the symptoms of the disease disappear.
If necessary, a cotton swab soaked in solution can be inserted into the external auditory canal, which must be kept moist in the future, moistening with the preparation every 4 hours. The tampon is replaced after 24 hours.
In chronic diseases of the ears and eyes, discontinuation of therapy is carried out, gradually reducing the frequency of use.
Side effects
After instilling eye and ear drops of Garazon, a short-term burning sensation, dryness or itching at the site of application is possible.
Side effects associated with the effects of Garazon drops on the eyes:
- Glucocorticosteroids: mydriasis, glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure, development of posterior subcapsular cataract, damage to the optic nerve, perforation of the cornea and sclera, narrowing of the fields and decreased visual acuity, acute anterior uveitis, penetration of air bubbles after surgical treatment of cataracts, delayed wound healing, development of secondary infection eye (eg Herpes Zoster), ptosis and accommodation disturbance;
- Antibiotic drugs: allergic reactions.
Transient eye irritation has also been reported with gentamicin sulfate.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms due to long-term use of high doses of GCS are hypercortisolism, suppression of the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system. In case of an overdose of antibiotics from the aminoglycoside group, a negative effect on hearing and / or on the functioning of the vestibular apparatus is possible.
For the treatment of the condition, a gradual cancellation of Garazon is recommended, if necessary, the appointment of symptomatic treatment, including the correction of water-electrolyte imbalance.
special instructions
The drug is intended for topical use only. Subconjunctival administration and administration of Garazon directly into the anterior chamber of the eye is prohibited.
The lack of a quick therapeutic effect during the use of Garazon serves as the basis for clarifying the diagnosis.
If the symptoms of the disease persist or if it recurs, a bacteriological study should be carried out to determine the sensitivity of the pathogen to antibiotics.
When Garazon is prescribed for a period of 10 days or more, intraocular pressure should be measured. Eye tonometry is recommended using a slit lamp. Patients with a family history of open-angle glaucoma, high myopia, and diabetes mellitus are at risk of increased intraocular pressure as a result of topical glucocorticosteroids.
It is known that in diseases that cause thinning of the sclera or cornea, topical application of glucocorticosteroids can lead to perforation of the eyeball. Because of this, it is not recommended to start treatment of bacterial corneal ulcers that can be caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa with a combination of an antibiotic and a glucocorticosteroid. In this case, at the beginning of treatment, it is advisable to use only antibacterial drugs. If there is a response to antibiotic therapy, it is possible to add an anti-inflammatory drug to the treatment to prevent corneal scar formation and minimize fibrotic response.
Glucocorticosteroids in acute purulent processes in the eye can mask or potentiate an already existing infection.
When treating herpes simplex virus infections, glucocorticosteroids should be used with extreme caution.
Prolonged topical use of glucocorticosteroids or antibiotics can lead to an increase in the growth of insensitive microorganisms, including fungi.
The development of cross-allergic reactions has been noted between various glucocorticosteroids and aminoglycosides.
To avoid cross-infection and contamination, one bottle of Garazon should not be used for the simultaneous treatment of an ear and eye infection. If the dropper bottle is used by more than one person, infection may spread.
With prolonged therapy, ear and eye drops Garazon should be canceled gradually.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is not recommended to use the drug during the period of gestation. During pregnancy, Garazon ear and eye drops can only be prescribed by a doctor, provided there is a clinically significant excess of the potential benefit from its use to the mother over the possible risks to the fetus.
It is not known whether the components of Garazon penetrate into breast milk, therefore, if it is necessary to use the drug, breastfeeding should be abandoned.

The safety and efficacy of Garazon eye and ear drops in the treatment of children under the age of 8 have not been established.
