Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Desitin is an anti-inflammatory topical drug. Prevents the development of diaper dermatitis, softens the skin and protects it from irritating urine and other substances.
Desitin's properties are determined by the complex action of the components. Zinc oxide, cod liver oil, in combination with petrolatum-lanolin base ointment form a physical barrier by creating a protective coating on the skin or mucous membranes. As a result, the impact of irritating substances on the affected areas is reduced, which prevents the appearance of a rash.
The visible effect in the treatment of diaper rash is achieved within 24 hours from the moment of application. As a result of therapy, a long-term protective effect against moisture is provided, which is especially important at night.
Desitin has a weak astringent effect, so the drug can be used as an anti-inflammatory and protective agent for minor scratches, cuts, burns, as well as in the treatment of mild skin lesions and eczema.
Indications for use
- Prevention and treatment of diaper rash;
- First aid for minor skin lesions of various etiologies: sunburn, cuts, minor burns, scratches.
Contraindications
According to the instructions, Desitin is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Instructions for the use of Desitin: method and dosage

Treatment of diaper rash in infants begins when mild skin irritation, redness, or diaper rash appears. The ointment should be applied to the previously washed and dried affected surface of the child's body 3 or more times a day, with any change of diapers.
To prevent diaper rash, it is recommended to regularly apply the ointment to the skin of those parts of the body that are constantly covered with a diaper or diaper, until symptoms of diaper rash appear. It is especially important to apply the ointment before bedtime for a child, when his diapers may be wet for a long time.
For first aid for sunburns, cuts, scrapes and minor burns, the ointment should be applied in a thin layer only to uninfected and superficial lesions. A gauze bandage can be used if necessary.

Reviews about Desitin
The overwhelming number of reviews about Desitin are positive. They note its high efficiency in the treatment of any diaper rash, as well as inflammation and redness of the skin. The disadvantages include the specific smell of fish oil, as well as the consistency of the ointment - it is poorly washed off the hands and remains on clothes. In addition, they indicate that the drug dries the skin. The cost of Desitin is estimated as high in comparison with funds with a similar effect.
