Donormil overdose
Donormil is a drug with a sedative, hypnotic and antihistamine (antiallergic) effect. It is most often taken for insomnia to improve the process of falling asleep and the quality of sleep. It is taken strictly according to the doctor's prescription. If the prescribed dosage is exceeded or the duration of the course of treatment is independently increased, an overdose may occur.

How much Donormil is needed for an overdose?
The active ingredient is doxylamine succinate, an antagonist of histamine receptors, providing antiallergic and hypnotic effect. The manufacturer recommends taking Donormil for no more than 5 days at a dose of 15 mg once 20-30 minutes before bedtime. Overdose occurs in the following cases:
- exceeding the therapeutic dose, that is, taking more than 15 mg of the drug once;
- taking the drug by people over 60;
- taking medication in patients with impaired liver and / or kidney function.
It is very dangerous to take Donormil while intoxicated, since alcoholic beverages potentiate the effect of a sleeping pill, and an overdose can occur when taking a therapeutic dose.
Signs of overdose
The main symptoms of an overdose with Donormil:
- severe drowsiness;
- mydriasis (dilated pupils);
- visual impairment associated with a violation of the accommodation process;
- hyperemia of the skin of the face and neck;
- dry mouth;
- violation of the rhythm of the heart;
- increased body temperature;
- increased anxiety;
- impaired coordination of movements, involuntary movements, tremors of the limbs;
- hallucinations, disturbances of consciousness.
With a significant overdose of Donormil, an epileptic seizure or coma may occur. Severe overdose is often accompanied by rhabdomyolysis (destruction of muscle cells), which leads to acute renal failure.

First aid for overdose with Donormil
- Gastric lavage. At the prehospital stage, it is performed by the "restaurant" method: the victim is given 0.5-1 liters of cool water to drink, then an attack of vomiting is provoked, irritating the nerve endings in the area of the tongue root. Repeat the procedure several times until clean wash water.
- Reception of enterosorbent. Enterosorbents absorb the drug from the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing its further absorption. Activated carbon is given at the rate of 1 g / kg of body weight.
- Drink plenty of fluids. The victim should be given warm tea, plain or still mineral water in small sips, but often. Drinking plenty of water helps to increase urine output and accelerate the excretion of Donormil from the body with urine.
Antidote
There is no specific antidote to Donormil.
When is medical attention needed?
In case of an overdose with Donormil, seeking medical help is mandatory, regardless of the severity of the overdose, since even with mild symptoms, the victim's condition may suddenly deteriorate sharply at any time.
Treatment of patients with overdose is carried out in a toxicology department. To accelerate the elimination of the sleeping pill from the body, forced diuresis is performed with alkalinization of blood plasma. This measure also reduces the risk of developing acute renal failure.
With respiratory depression, the administration of respiratory analeptics is not justified, since they increase the need for oxygen in the brain tissue and can cause a convulsive seizure. To combat hypoxia, oxygen therapy is carried out, and in case of severe respiratory failure, the patient is transferred to mechanical ventilation.
Possible consequences
With severe intoxication, patients develop acute renal failure (ARF), which significantly worsens the prognosis for recovery. In some patients, acute renal failure goes into a chronic stage, requiring lifelong treatment and systematic extracorporeal hemodialysis sessions or kidney transplantation.
With a significant overdose with Donormil, especially against the background of alcohol intoxication, a lethal outcome is possible.
Prevention
To combat insomnia, you should first use non-drug means, for example, normalize the daily routine, walk in the fresh air before going to bed, etc. And only if non-drug measures do not allow restoring sleep, consult a doctor and get a prescription for a sleeping pill.
To prevent overdose, you should adhere to the rules:
- do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor;
- do not increase the duration of therapy on your own;
- inform the doctor about existing (or previous) liver or kidney diseases;
- never take the drug together with alcohol, antihistamines and tranquilizers.
