Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Defenorm is a herbal laxative. The active substance absorbs water, the amount of which is many times its own weight. This makes the stool more voluminous while keeping the faeces soft. The use of the drug stimulates intestinal peristalsis.
Pharmacokinetics
From the digestive tract, Defenorm is not absorbed (not broken down or absorbed), and therefore pharmacokinetic studies have not been conducted.
Partially plant fibers are broken down in the large intestine by the intestinal flora to unsaturated fatty acids, which have a trophic and supportive effect on the intestinal mucosa.
Indications for use
- diseases / conditions in which a facilitated, soft bowel movement is desirable - hemorrhoids, cracks in the anus, conditions after surgical interventions in the rectum;
- chronic constipation;
- irritable bowel syndrome;
- diarrhea of various etiologies (as an adjuvant).
Contraindications
- intestinal obstruction or the presence of a threat of its appearance;
- violations that are accompanied by restriction of water intake;
- intestinal paralysis or megacolon syndrome;
- dense feces (coprolites, accumulations of hardened feces in the sigmoid / rectum);
- violations of water and electrolyte balance;
- sudden changes in bowel function (lasting longer than 2 weeks);
- lack of effect after taking a laxative;
- severe diabetes mellitus;
- abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea until the causes of their occurrence are established;
- vomiting or difficulty swallowing;
- rectal bleeding of uncertain etiology;

The duration of therapy is determined by the doctor individually.
Side effects
In the first days of treatment, there may be some increase in flatulence, as well as a feeling of intestinal fullness (disappears with continued administration of the drug).

When combined therapy with thyroid hormones, dose adjustment may be required.
During the treatment period, elderly and debilitated patients need medical supervision.
For long-term constipation and irregular bowel movements lasting more than 7 days, or diarrhea that lasts longer than 2 days and is accompanied by fever or blood impurities, you should consult your doctor.
For patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, a decrease in the dose of insulin may be required (due to a slowdown in carbohydrate resorption).
Pediatric use
Defenorm can be prescribed to children over 12 years old.
Drug interactions
With the simultaneous use of certain drugs / substances, the following effects may develop:
- cardiac glycosides, minerals (calcium, lithium, iron, zinc), coumarins, vitamin B 12, carbamazepine: slowing down their absorption (the recommended interval between the use of these drugs is 30-60 minutes);
- drugs with antidiarrheal action, as well as drugs that inhibit intestinal motility (loperamide): the combination is not recommended;
- insulin (in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus): a decrease in blood sugar levels, which is associated with a slowdown in the absorption of carbohydrates (a decrease in the dose of insulin may be required);
