Erotex is a non-hormonal contraceptive drug for topical use.
Release form and composition
Dosage form Erotexa - vaginal suppositories: white with a yellowish tinge, bullet-shaped, with the scent of a rose, or lavender, or lemon (in a cellular contour packaging 5 pcs., In a cardboard box 1 or 2 packages).
Composition of 1 suppository:
- active substance: benzalkonium chloride - 18.9 mg;
- auxiliary components: lipophilic base (solid fat with the addition of glycerol monooleate), rose oil, or lavender oil, or lemon oil.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
The active substance benzalkonium chloride is a cationic detergent that, by incorporating into the cell membrane and interacting with membrane lipoproteins of sperm, damages membranes, disrupting their barrier functions, which leads to cell death. This mechanism makes it impossible to fertilize an egg with destroyed spermatozoa and, consequently, the contraceptive effect of the drug. The spermicidal effect develops 5 minutes after the introduction of Erotex into the vagina.
Benzalkonium chloride does not affect the normal vaginal microflora (including the number of lactobacilli) and hormonal levels. Such microorganisms as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Herpes simplex type 2, Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia spp., Staphylococcus aureus are sensitive to the drug. Benzalkonium chloride has little effect on Treponema pallidum, Haemophilus ducreyi, Candida albicans, and Gardnerella vaginalis. Resistance to the active substance is shown by the bacterium Mycoplasma spp.
Pharmacokinetics
With intravaginal administration of benzalkonium chloride, it is practically not absorbed. The substance is adsorbed on the mucous membrane of the vagina and cervix. It is removed from the body with normal physiological secretions and by simple rinsing with water.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Erotex is indicated for use as a local contraception in women of reproductive age (including with contraindications to the use of intrauterine contraception or oral contraceptives, after childbirth, during breastfeeding, after termination of pregnancy, during perimenopause, with irregular sexual intercourse, if you are late or miss the reception of constantly taken oral contraceptives).
Contraindications
- vaginitis;
- irritation and / or ulceration of the vaginal mucosa and cervix;
- increased individual sensitivity to any component of the drug.
Instructions for the use of Erotex: method and dosage

One suppository is designed for one sexual intercourse. The duration of action of the drug is 4 hours. With each repeated intercourse, a new suppository should be introduced.
Side effects
During the use of Erotex, the following side effects are possible: allergic reactions, painful urination, contact dermatitis, burning and itching in the vagina and / or the partner's penis.

special instructions
For a more effective action of Erotex, it is necessary to carefully observe the method of application of the drug.
Suppositories can be used in conjunction with a condom, vaginal diaphragm, or intrauterine contraceptives.
Since soap inactivates the contraceptive effect of the drug, you should avoid washing the vagina with soapy water. For hygiene reasons, clean water can be used for the outdoor toilet. It is not recommended to douch the vagina within 2 hours after intercourse.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Since the drug is a contraceptive, it is not used during pregnancy. In cases of pregnancy on the background of the use of benzalkonium chloride, the effect of the drug on the course of pregnancy was not observed.
Erotex can be used in women during lactation, since the drug does not penetrate into breast milk.
Drug interactions
Solutions containing soap, as well as any medications administered intravaginally, reduce the spermicidal effect of suppositories.
