Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Natamycin, the active component of Ecofucin, is a polyene antibiotic from the macrolide group. It has a wide spectrum of antimycotic action. The fungicidal effect of natamycin is due to inhibition of the biosynthesis of sterols, which are components of cell membranes, as a result of which the integrity of fungal cells is disrupted, their growth and development stops.
Most pathogenic yeast-like fungi (especially Candida albicans), yeast (Rhodotorula and Torulopsis) and other pathogenic fungi (Penicillium, Aspergillus) are sensitive to natamycin. In relation to dermatophytes (Epidermophyton, Trichophyton, Microsporum), the drug is less active. It has no effect on gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms in vitro.
Resistance to natamycin has not been observed in clinical practice.
Ecofucin contains the prebiotic lactulose as an excipient. This component helps to maintain the balance of the vaginal microflora and reduces the risk of developing vaginal dysbiosis.
Pharmacokinetics
Natamycin has no systemic effect, since when applied topically through intact skin and from the surface of mucous membranes, it is absorbed in small quantities.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Ekofucin is indicated for use in candidiasis (caused by fungi of the genus Candida) vaginitis, vulvitis, vulvovaginitis.
Contraindications
A contraindication to the use of Ekofucin is an increased individual sensitivity to natamycin or any auxiliary component of the drug.
Instructions for the use of Ekofucin: method and dosage
Ecofucin suppositories are used intravaginally. Having previously freed the suppository from the contour packaging, it is inserted as deep as possible into the vagina, while in the supine position, immediately before bedtime.
The recommended dosing regimen for candidal vaginitis, vulvitis, vulvovaginitis: 1 suppository 1 time per day at night for 3-6 days.
In the case of persistent vaginitis caused by Candida albicans, natamycin is additionally prescribed in tablets for oral administration - 1 tablet 4 times a day for 10–20 days (to sanitize the focus of a fungal infection in the intestine).
The duration of the course of therapy is determined by the doctor. It is recommended to continue treatment for several days after the symptoms of the disease disappear.
During menstruation, suppositories are temporarily not used.
