Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Fluoride ions affect the processes of mineralization of dental hard tissues during development, forming fluorapatites - the most resistant forms of apatites. Sodium fluoride enhances the inhibition of bone resorption and has a bactericidal and antirachitic effect (the latter is due to the replacement of hydroxyapatite with fluorapatite in bone trabeculae and stimulation of osteoblasts). The drug has an anti-carious effect, reducing the cariogenic activity of dental plaque (especially in children and adolescents).

Pharmacokinetics

Sodium fluoride is absorbed quickly and completely, metabolized in the liver. Its maximum concentration in blood plasma is reached in 30-60 minutes. The substance is excreted through the kidneys by 50% and is excreted in small quantities in sweat and feces. When any dose is taken, approximately 50% of the sodium fluoride ingested into the body is accumulated in the bone tissue and hard tissues of the tooth, as well as in the teeth and bones in the growth stage.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, sodium fluoride is prescribed for the prevention of dental caries in children 2-15 years old (in cases where the concentration of fluoride in drinking water does not exceed 0.7 mg / l).

Contraindications

  • Hypothyroidism;
  • Exacerbation of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
  • Renal and / or hepatic impairment;
  • Living in an area with a sufficient fluoride content in water (more than 0.7 mg / ml);
  • Pregnancy and lactation;
  • Hypersensitivity to drug components.

Instructions for the use of Sodium fluoride: method and dosage

Sodium fluoride tablets are taken orally, completely dissolved in the mouth, preferably after brushing your teeth before bedtime.

Usually the following dosage regimen for Sodium fluoride for children is prescribed (daily dose):

  • 2-5 years: 1 tablet (1.1 mg);
  • 5-15 years: 1 tablet (2.2 mg) or 2 tablets (1.1 mg).

Until the age of 15 years Sodium fluoride for teeth is recommended to be taken annually for at least 250 days a year.

Side effects

During the use of Sodium fluoride, such disorders as eosinophilia, allergic reactions (in the form of a skin rash), nausea, rhinitis, diarrhea, vomiting, decreased appetite, headache, increased fatigue, fluorosis (the appearance of brown and yellow spots, mottling, abrasion) and the fragility of teeth).

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose of Sodium fluoride are: increased fatigue, weakness, hypersalivation, lacrimation, decreased blood pressure, tachycardia, impaired appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, respiratory failure, respiratory arrest, fever, convulsions, tremor, myasthenia gravis, miosis, visual disturbances, arthralgias, pain in the lower extremities.

As a treatment, liquid and calcium (milk, calcium lactate or calcium gluconate solution) are injected to rapidly precipitate fluorides. Then the stomach is washed with 1% sodium chloride solution or acidified water, saline laxatives are prescribed, and vitamins and electrolytes are injected intravenously (20 ml of 10–20% calcium gluconate solution). Symptomatic therapy and regular monitoring of blood calcium levels are also recommended. Hemodialysis gives good results in removing sodium fluoride from the body.

special instructions

When using Sodium fluoride for teeth, you should follow the instructions of the dentist and the doses recommended in the instructions. It is necessary to ensure that the child does not receive additional fluoride while taking other drugs or food supplements at the same time.

Do not prescribe sodium fluoride for children under 10 years of age at a dose of more than 1 mg per day (due to the likelihood of developing dental fluorosis). The use of the drug in children under 6 years of age requires medical supervision.

To avoid the development of fluorosis, it is recommended to regularly conduct dental examinations of the teeth (at least 1-2 times a year).

In phenylketonuria, it must be borne in mind that the flavored tablets contain aspartame, which is the source of phenylalanine.

Children with lactose intolerance should not take unflavored tablets.
