Ankylosis
Ankylosis (ankylosis; Greek ankylos - curved, curve + Greek word-formation suffix -sis of a non-inflammatory disease) is a lack of mobility in a joint caused by inflammation, degenerative processes, trauma, or artificially created by surgical intervention.
Allocate:
- Extra-articular ankylosis (ankylosis extraarticularis) - caused by an extra-articular bone bridge between the bones forming the joint;
- Intra-articular ankylosis (ankylosis intraarticularis) - due to the fusion of articulating articular surfaces with each other;
- Bone ankylosis (ankylosis ossea) - intra-articular ankylosis, characterized by the disappearance of the joint gap on the radiograph; caused by bone fusion of articulating articular surfaces;
- Fibrous ankylosis (ankylosis fibrosa) - caused by cicatricial adhesions between the articulating articular surfaces.
