Enterofuril is a drug from the group of broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs. The drug has no systemic effect, it is prescribed for the treatment of infectious diarrhea. The active ingredient is nifuroxazide, a 5-nitrofuran derivative. Enterofuril has a bactericidal, bacteriostatic effect, is active against many causative agents of gastrointestinal infections. The antimicrobial effect of the drug is dose-dependent, while low, medium doses have a bacteriostatic effect, high - bactericidal.
The bacteriostatic effect of Enterofuril is associated with the inhibition of dehydrogenase activity, while the biosynthesis of the necessary compounds in the bacterial cell is disrupted. As a result, the respiratory chain is blocked, the tricarboxylic acid cycle is inhibited, and the bacterial cell loses its ability to multiply.
The bactericidal effect of Enterofuril is due to the ability of high dosages of the drug to destructively affect the membrane of bacterial cells. As a result of the violation of the integrity of the cell membrane, the death of the bacterium occurs.
Enterofuril is also able to inhibit the production of exotoxins by pathogenic bacteria, as a result of which irritation of the cells of the intestinal epithelium decreases and the production of fluid into the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract decreases.
By increasing the phagocytic activity Enterofuril activates the immune system.
The drug does not have a depressing effect on non-pathogenic flora, and therefore dysbiosis does not occur during its use.
After oral administration, Enterofuril is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, there is no systemic effect. A high concentration of the drug is created in the intestine. Enterofuril is excreted in the feces.
Due to the high clinical effectiveness, reviews of Enterofuril are positive. In addition to a good effect in bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract, the drug also reduces the risk of bacterial superinfection in viral diarrhea, therefore, with this pathology, it is also advisable to prescribe Enterofuril.
Indications for the use of Enterofuril
According to the instructions for Enterofuril, the indications for its appointment are:
- acute, chronic diarrhea of bacterial etiology (if there are signs of helminth invasion, Enterofuril is not used);
- chronic diarrhea with colitis;
- iatrogenic diarrhea caused by antimicrobial prescription;
- according to the indications, Enterofuril can be prescribed for diarrhea of unspecified etiology.
Contraindications to the use of Enterofuril
According to the instructions for Enterofuril, this drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to nifuroxazide or other nitrofuran derivatives, in childhood (up to 1 month). The drug is not used to treat premature babies, in encapsulated form - under the age of 7 years.
Method of application, dosage
For the treatment of patients over 7 years old, Enterofuril is used in the form of capsules and suspension. Up to 7 years it is recommended to use Enterofuril suspension. The duration of therapy, as well as the dosage in a specific clinical situation, is determined by the doctor.
The dosage of Enterofuril for adult patients is 200 mg (contained in one scoop) four times a day. The maximum daily dosage is 800 mg. The recommended course of treatment is 7 days.
In patients aged 2-7 years, the dosage is 200 mg (measuring spoon) three times a day. The maximum daily dosage is 600 mg. The duration of therapy is no more than a week.
In patients aged 7 months - 2 years, the dosage is 100 mg (contained in half a measuring spoon) three times a day. The maximum daily dosage is 400 mg. Duration of use of Enterofuril should not exceed 7 days.
In children from 1 to 7 months, the dosage is 100 mg twice a day.
Enterofuril is used regardless of the diet. The capsule should be swallowed whole, washed down with plenty of water. It is not recommended to divide the capsule. The suspension must be shaken thoroughly before use. For convenience, it is recommended to use the supplied measuring spoon.
The drug is usually well tolerated, as evidenced by reviews of Enterofuril from patients. In isolated cases, the appearance of an allergic reaction in the form of urticaria was noted.
The use of Enterofuril during pregnancy
According to strict indications, Enterofuril can be prescribed during pregnancy, but only in situations where the expected benefit to the mother's body significantly exceeds the potential threat to the fetus. There is currently no data on the negative effect of Enterofuril on the fetus. Enterofuril does not pass into breast milk, therefore, it can be prescribed during lactation.
Interaction of Enterofuril with other drugs
Due to the lack of absorption, the interaction of Enterofuril with other drugs is unlikely. However, the use of the drug with medicinal products containing ethyl alcohol is not recommended. Enterofuril cannot be used simultaneously with sorbents, in this case its effectiveness decreases.
There is no information about an overdose of Enterofuril. In case of accidental intake of very high doses of the drug, non-specific therapy is recommended: gastric lavage, oral enterosorbents.
The effectiveness of Enterofuril and analogues has been proven in many clinical trials. The drug has proven itself well in the treatment of infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, so the reviews about Enterofuril are positive. The drug is relatively safe, well tolerated in most cases.
It is recommended to store Enterofuril at room temperature.
