Polygynax is a combined preparation with antifungal and antibacterial action, active against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, having a fungicidal effect on Candida fungi, improving trophic processes in the vaginal mucosa. Ineffective against anaerobic bacteria and Streptococcus spp. It is used in gynecology.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - vaginal capsules: soft, oval, from pale yellow to beige; inside - a semi-liquid homogeneous mass from yellow to brown color (in blisters of 6 pcs., 1 or 2 blisters in a cardboard box).
Active ingredients in 1 capsule:
- Nystatin - 100,000 IU (international units);
- Polymyxin B sulfate - 35,000 IU;
- Neomycin sulfate - 35,000 IU.
Additional components: hydrogenated soybean oil, Tephos 63, Dimethicone 1000.
The composition of the capsule shell: gelatin, glycerol, dimethicone 1000.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Polygynax is a local combined preparation with antibacterial and antifungal effect, characterized by bactericidal activity against various microorganisms.
Polymyxin B and neomycin are antibiotics. These substances inhibit the activity of many gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial microorganisms. Polygynax is ineffective against streptococci and anaerobic bacteria.
Nystatin has a fungicidal effect against fungal strains of the genus Candida, which ensures the high efficiency of Polygynax in thrush. The drug has a positive effect on trophic processes in the vaginal mucosa and is used for fungal infections.
Pharmacokinetics
The active ingredients of the drug with intravaginal use are evenly distributed over the mucous membrane of the vagina, where their local bactericidal and fungicidal properties are manifested. The active components of Polygynax are practically not absorbed into the systemic circulation.
Indications for use
Vaginal capsules Polygynax is a drug for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory gynecological diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to the combination of its active ingredients:
- Cervicovaginitis;
- Vulvovaginitis;
- Fungal vaginitis;
- Nonspecific vaginitis;
- Mixed vaginitis.
Also, Polygynax is used to prevent infectious complications in the following cases:
- Before intrauterine diagnostic procedures;
- Before and after diathermocoagulation of the cervix;
- Before childbirth;
- Before operating gynecological interventions.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- I trimester of pregnancy;
- Breastfeeding period;
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug.
In the II and III trimesters of pregnancy, Polygynax can be used strictly according to the doctor's prescription after a careful assessment of the balance of benefits and risks.
Instructions for the use of Polygynax: method and dosage
According to the instructions, Polygynax is intended for intravaginal use. The drug should be injected deep into the vagina in the supine position, 1 capsule 1 time per day, before bedtime.
Duration of therapeutic use is 12 days, prophylactic - 6 days.
If the next use is missed, the dose should not be doubled, it is necessary to continue using the drug as usual.
Side effects
- Local reactions: irritation, itching, burning;
- Allergic reactions, incl. allergic contact erythema.
With prolonged use of the drug, there is a likelihood of systemic side effects characteristic of aminoglycosides.
Overdose
Overdose cases when using the drug have not been recorded. Theoretically, in the case of excessive use of capsules, side effects characteristic of Polygynax may appear, or the aggravation of the already observed negative effects.

Polygynax is used only after taking a smear and conducting a bacteriological analysis.
In order to avoid the risk of reinfection and the formation of resistance to the drug of certain pathogens, the duration of treatment should be limited.
At the time of menstruation, the course of therapy should not be interrupted.
In case of the appearance of the side effects indicated in the instructions or the development of other undesirable reactions, it is necessary to inform the attending physician about this.
It is not recommended to use latex contraceptives (condoms and caps) during the treatment period.
Cases of a negative effect of the drug on the speed of reactions and the ability to concentrate are unknown.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
During the first trimester of pregnancy and during lactation, the drug is contraindicated. In the II and III trimesters of pregnancy, Polygynax should be used with caution.
Drug interactions
Polygynax is not recommended to be used simultaneously with spermicides, as they can reduce its activity.
