Ichthyol ointment is used both in pure form and in the form of 10% glycerin lotion, for which equal volumes of glycerin and 20% ichthyol ointment are mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained.
According to the instructions, Ichthyol ointment is evenly distributed over the surface of the skin at the sites of inflammation and rubbed until a feeling of warmth appears.
For eczema, burns, arthritis, erysipelas and neuralgia, after applying the ointment, the site of the lesion is covered with a gauze napkin and fixed with a plaster or bandage. Dressings should be changed daily.
The amount of ointment applied for treatment depends on the size of the lesion. Usually 2-4 g of Ichthyol ointment is enough to be applied to the area of the sacrum or knee joint.
Ichthyol ointment is indicated for staphyloderma and streptoderma. It is used in the form of applications of 10% glycerin lotion, covering the place of application with parchment paper under the bandage. Change the bandage every few times a day.
Ichthyol ointment is indicated for gynecological diseases. Apply in the form of tampons soaked in 10% glycerin solution, several times a day into the rectum after setting a cleansing enema or spontaneous bowel cleansing.
Ichthyol ointment for boils and hydradenitis is used undiluted in the form of ichthyol cakes. To do this, approximately 2 g of ointment must be applied to the boil and covered with a cotton swab. The tampon soaked in ichthyol must be firmly fixed on the skin surface with a plaster. Usually, improvement occurs within the first day. Ointment tampons are changed every 8-10 hours.
On the face with boils Ichthyol ointment is best used diluted with glycerin in order to accidentally prevent contact with mucous membranes and eyes.
