Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is synthesized in the body during the transformation of cysteine. It accelerates the processes of regeneration and repair in diseases that are accompanied by significant metabolic disorders of the eye tissues, and diseases of a dystrophic nature.
Taurine normalizes the functions of cell membranes, improves the conditions for the conduction of a nerve impulse, maintains the stability of the electrolyte composition of the cytoplasm due to the accumulation of potassium and calcium ions, and activates metabolic and energy processes.
Pharmacokinetics
With local application of Taufon, systemic absorption is considered insignificant.
Indications for use
Eye drops
According to the instructions, Taufon is prescribed concurrently with other drugs in the treatment of the following diseases / conditions:
- corneal dystrophy;
- corneal injury (as a stimulant of reparative processes);
- primary open-angle glaucoma (in combination with β-blockers; in order to improve the outflow of aqueous humor);
- cataract (senile, traumatic, radiation and other types).
Eye Films
Taufon is prescribed concurrently with other drugs as a stimulator of reparative (restorative) processes in tissues with dystrophy and corneal injuries.
Contraindications
- age up to 18 years;
- individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Additionally for eye films:
- burdened history of recurrent corneal erosion;
- a tendency to drug allergies.
Taufon eye drops are prescribed to lactating and pregnant women only in cases where the expected effect is higher than the possible harm (the safety profile for this group of patients has not been studied). It is contraindicated to use eye films in this category of patients.
Instructions for use of Taufon: method and dosage
Eye drops
When treating cataracts, Taufon eye drops are prescribed in the form of instillations from 2 to 4 times a day, 1-2 drops for a course of 3 months. The course is repeated with a break of 30 days.
For degenerative diseases and corneal injuries, the drug is used in the same doses for a course of 1 month.
For the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, Taufon is used 2 times a day, 1-2 drops in combination with timolol or butylaminohydroxypropoxyphenoxymethyl methyloxadiazole and its combined forms (15–20 minutes before their use) for 6 weeks. At the end of the course, a break of 14 days is required.
Eye Films
Taufon is applied topically. First, you need to remove the drug from the package using clean ophthalmic tweezers.
Films should be placed behind the lower eyelid. To do this, pull the lower eyelid and put the drug into the formed space between the eyeball and the eyelid, after which it is necessary to release the eyelid and keep the eye in a motionless (calm) state for 30-60 seconds to wet and transfer the film to a soft (elastic) state.
In the treatment of corneal dystrophy, Taufon is used once every 1-2 days. Heading dose - from 10 to 15 films.
For corneal injuries, the drug is used once a day for a course of 10 days.
Side effects
During the use of Taufon, allergic reactions may develop.
Other side reactions in addition to eye films:
- slight conjunctival hyperemia;
- a feeling of a foreign body in the eye (if this violation persists for 3-5 minutes, the drug must be removed).
Overdose
There is currently no information on drug overdose.
special instructions
In cases of an increase in the adverse reactions indicated in the instructions, as well as in the event of any other uncharacteristic symptoms, you should consult a doctor.
When using eye films, intolerance phenomena may develop, especially with a shallow lower conjunctival fornix.
Drug interactions
The effect of Taufon can be enhanced by increasing the coefficient of ease of outflow and reducing the production of aqueous humor.
In patients with open-angle glaucoma during combination therapy, there is a significant increase in the hypotensive effect of β-blockers (timolol and butylaminohydroxypropoxyphenoxymethyl methyloxadiazole).

Analogs of Taufon are: Etaden, Adgelon, Emoxipin, Quinax, Cytochrome C, Oculokhel, Slezin, Oftolik, Oftan Katakhrom, Optiv, Okoferon, Hilo-Komod, Systain Balance, Systain Gel, Systain Ultra.

Reviews about Taufon
Taurine has been used in ophthalmic practice for a long time and successfully, therefore, reviews about Taufon from doctors are mostly favorable. If the patient observes all the doctor's instructions, the results of the drug treatment are impressive for all indications for use.
Patients also consider Taufon trustworthy and note its effectiveness and speed of action, as well as the almost complete absence of adverse reactions.
Sometimes pediatricians prescribe drops to children under 18 years of age, but they act at their own peril and risk, since the safety of their use in this age group has not been proven by clinical studies. In some cases, the results of this treatment have been quite successful.
