Suprax is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the cephalosporin series for oral administration.
Pharmacological action of Suprax
Suprax is the first antibiotic among 3 generation cephalosporins that can be taken orally. It is based on cefixime and has a broad spectrum of activity. The bactericidal mechanism of action of the drug is realized by inhibiting the formation of the main component of the cell wall of pathogens. Unlike previous generations of its counterparts, Suprax is resistant to beta-lactamases (bacterial enzymes that destroy the antibiotic, making its action ineffective).
According to the instructions, Suprax inhibits the vital activity of gram-positive (various streptococci) and gram-negative (hemophilic and Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Salmonella, Shigella, Serratia, Citrobacter, Gonococcus) bacteria, but Pseudomonas aeruginosa, most types of Staphylococcus and listosis, enterobacteria.
The bioavailability of the antibiotic is 40 - 50%, food intake does not reduce it (as in other oral cephalosporins), but only slightly lengthens the time to reach the maximum blood content. Among all previous generations of Suprax analogues for oral administration, it has the longest half-life, thanks to which it can be taken once a day, which is very convenient, for example, for small children.
The Suprax drug penetrates well into the focus of infection - into the middle ear cavity, paranasal sinuses, tonsils, lungs, biliary tract.
With urine, 50% of the unchanged drug is excreted from the body, making it highly effective in the treatment of urinary tract infections. About 10% of it is excreted in the bile.
When taken simultaneously with diuretics, the elimination of the drug slows down, its high concentration remains in the blood longer.
According to reviews, Suprax has a slight depressing effect on the intestinal microflora in comparison with its counterparts.
Release form
Suprax is available in two forms for oral administration - adult (400 mg capsules) and children (granules for the preparation of a suspension with strawberry flavor 100 mg / 5 ml - 60 ml).
Indications for the use of Suprax
According to the instructions, the drug is intended for the treatment of infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to cefixime. These are tonsillopharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, infections of the genitourinary tract (pyelonephritis, cystitis, uncomplicated gonorrheal urethritis and cervicitis). Suprax received good reviews in pediatric practice.
Contraindications
The antibiotic should not be used in case of intolerance and allergic reactions to it or other beta-lactam antibiotics (cephalosporins and penicillins), during breastfeeding (breastfeeding is stopped during treatment), in children under 6 months of age (no clinical studies).
With caution, the use of Suprax is possible in chronic renal failure and in the elderly.
Method of administration and dosage
The drug is taken orally once a day. Before treatment, it is advisable to investigate the sensitivity of the pathogen to the antibiotic. Adults and children over 12 years of age are prescribed Suprax at a dose of 400 mg / day (1 capsule), the course is on average 7 to 10 days, it is determined by the attending physician. In case of impaired renal function, the dose should be reduced.
For children, the dose is calculated by body weight - 8 mg / kg once a day or 4 mg / kg with an interval of 12 hours, 2 times a day. There is a special baby form for them - a suspension with the taste of fresh strawberries. 1 ml of the finished suspension contains 20 mg of the drug.
From 6 months to 1 year, the daily dose of Suprax according to the instructions is 2.5 - 4 ml, from 2 to 4 years - 5 ml, from 5 to 11 years - 6 - 10 ml.
To properly prepare the suspension, you need to shake the granules in the bottle, pour 40 ml of cool water into it in 2 stages, shaking thoroughly each time until a homogeneous suspension is formed. In order for the granules to dissolve well, the finished suspension must be allowed to stand for a short time. Suspension Suprax does not require refrigeration.
Suprax has a significant advantage over its analogues - it can be used to treat infections caused by rather aggressive pathogens on an outpatient basis. Also, the drug supports the possibility of stepwise therapy, when, due to the severity of the disease, treatment begins with parenteral forms of cephalosporins of the 3rd generation, and after 2 - 3 days, as the patient's condition improves, you can switch to oral administration of Suprax.
Side effects of Suprax
According to reviews, Suprax during treatment can cause urticaria, itching, dry mouth, nausea, stomatitis, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache. In the blood, the content of leukocytes and some biochemical parameters may change. Of the severe consequences of admission, anaphylactic shock, pseudomembranous colitis, interstitial nephritis are possible.
