Nurofen is a drug belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Pharmacological action of Nurofen
The active substance in Nurofen is ibuprofen, a derivative of phenylpropionic acid. When taken orally, it suppresses the formation of prostaglandins - substances that cause an inflammatory reaction in the human body (the so-called inflammatory mediators), due to which there is an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effect.
There are reviews about Nurofen from researchers, indicating that it stimulates the production of the body's own interferon, a substance that is one of the main factors of immunity. Thus, one of the additional actions of ibuprofen is the stimulation of immunity, which makes the use of Nurofen justified in the treatment of viral infections.
Release forms
Nurofen is available in the form of sugar-coated tablets, effervescent tablets, rectal suppositories and suspensions for children with strawberry or orange flavor.
Composition of Nurofen tablets: each coated tablet contains 200mg ibuprofen and excipients: sucrose, talc, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, stearic acid, opacode, gum, croscarmellose sodium, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium citrate, macrogol 6000.
Tablets are available in 6 and 12 pieces in a blister.
Nurofen composition in effervescent tablets: 200mg ibuprofen and excipients: sucrose, saccharin, sorbitol, potassium carbonate, citric acid, sodium saccharinate.
Effervescent tablets are available in tubes of 10 pcs.
Nurofen's composition as a suspension: contains 100mg ibuprofen per 5ml suspension, as well as auxiliary substances: water, glycerol, maltitol syrup, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, sodium saccharinate, gum, domiphene bromide, strawberry or orange flavor.
Rectal suppositories Nurofen, composition: ibuprofen 60mg, excipient - solid fat. Available in 5 pieces in a blister, 2 blisters in a package.
The Nurofen suspension is produced in 100 ml polyethylene bottles, equipped with a child protection mechanism, the set includes a special dispenser, with which the suspension is removed from the bottle.

Indications for use
The use of Nurofen is indicated in the treatment of diseases of a rheumatic nature, as well as to relieve inflammation, fever and pain. It is used as part of complex therapy for the treatment of the following conditions:
- Rheumatoid arthritis;
- Rheumatism;
- Spondylitis and spondyloarthritis, including ankylosing;
- Osteoarthritis;
- Gout;
- Bursitis;
- Myositis;
- Radiculitis;
- Neuritis;
- Neuralgia;
- Myalgia;
- Intense pain syndrome with injuries of any origin and post-traumatic conditions;
- Algodismenorrhea;
- Toothache;
- Headache;
- Seasonal viral infectious diseases accompanied by general malaise, fever, and aching muscles and joints;
- Diseases of the ENT organs and other inflammatory diseases accompanied by intense pain syndrome.
According to reviews, Nurofen in pediatric practice is effective as an antipyretic agent for colds and teething fever.
Nurofen instructions for use
Nurofen's use depends on the patient's age.
The daily dose of the drug for persons over 12 years of age is 1200 mg. It is advisable to split the daily dose into 3-4 doses, usually 200 mg per dose (maybe less), in case of urgent need and with the consent of the doctor, a single dose at the beginning of therapy can be increased to 400 mg.
According to Nurofen's instructions, children aged 6 to 12 years are prescribed in a dosage of no more than 200 mg 3-4 times a day. Between doses of the drug, a time interval of at least 6 hours is required. The maximum allowable daily dose is 900 mg.
Following Nurofen's instructions, sugar-coated tablets should preferably be taken after meals with plenty of water. Effervescent tablets are dissolved in a glass of water with a volume of 200-250 ml.
Nurofen in suppositories is produced for children aged 3 months to 2 years, a single dose is set at the rate of 5-10 mg per 1 kg of the child's weight, taken 3-4 times a day. The maximum permissible daily dose is determined at the rate of 30 mg per 1 kg of the child's weight.
According to the instructions, Nurofen in suspension is recommended in the following dosage:
- From 3 to 6 months - 2.5 ml up to 3 times a day;
- From 6 to 12 months - 2.5 ml 3-4 times a day;
- From 1 to 3 years - 5ml 3 times a day;
- From 4 to 6 years old - 7.5 ml 3-4 times a day;
- From 7 to 9 years old - 10ml 3 times a day;
- From 10 to 12 years old - 15ml 3 times a day.
Nurofen's instructions contain an indication of the inadmissibility of independent use of the drug for treatment lasting more than 3 days. If, 3 days after the start of Nurofen's use, the symptoms of the disease have not decreased, you should call a doctor who will give recommendations on the further use of the drug.
Side effects

Nurofen and analogues are contraindicated in the following cases:
- Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, especially gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
- Diseases of the blood;
- Hypersensitivity to any NSAID;
- Aspirin triad;
- Hypertension;
- Dysfunction of the liver, kidneys;
- Ophthalmic pathology;
- Pathology of the middle and inner ear;
- Age up to 3 months;
- 3rd trimester of pregnancy;
- Breast-feeding.
According to the instructions, Nurofen and analogs are carefully combined with other drugs; it is not recommended to do this without a doctor's prescription. The joint use of this drug and alcohol is unacceptable.
Storage rules
