Tablets for the preparation of eye drops Catalin

Catalin is a drug used in the early stages of senile cataract.

Release form and composition

Catalin is available in the form of tablets for the preparation of eye drops: from yellow to orange-red; after dissolution - a clear solution from yellow to orange-red (1 pc. in blisters made of aluminum foil and polyvinyl chloride film, 1 blister in a cardboard box complete with solvent (15 ml in a polypropylene bottle of amber-yellow color)).

The composition of 1 tablet includes:

  • Active ingredient: pyrenoxine - 0.75 mg (in the form of sodium pyrenoxine monohydrate - 0.85 mg);
  • Auxiliary components: aminoethylsulfonic acid (taurine) - 62 mg, boric acid - 12.15 mg.

The composition of the solvent: sodium borate - 1.2 mg, boric acid - 180 mg, potassium chloride - 24 mg, propyl parahydroxybenzoate - 1.5 mg, methyl parahydroxybenzoate - 3 mg, purified water - up to 15 ml.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Catalin inhibits the effect of quinone compounds on the body, inhibits the process of fat oxidation and the activity of aldose reductase, and also prevents the progression of cataracts. All of the above is proved by the quinoid theory, tested as a result of experiments on guinea pigs.

Pirenoxine is a competitive inhibitor of the action of quinone compounds produced due to abnormal metabolism of aromatic amino acids and stimulating the transformation of a water-soluble protein contained in the lens into insoluble, which leads to clouding of the lens substance. As a result of the use of Catalin, it is often possible to prevent the development of cataracts.

Pharmacokinetics

When Catalin is instilled into the conjunctival cavity 7 times with an interval of 5 minutes, the concentration of pyrenoxine in the lens is approximately 0.003 μg / ml, and in the intraocular fluid - 0.0189 μg / ml. The maximum concentration of the substance in the intraocular fluid is reached in about 2 hours, and in the lens - in 4 hours. Pyreneoxine binds well to plasma proteins and is practically not metabolized, excreted through the kidneys unchanged.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Catalin is prescribed for the treatment of senile cataracts (in the initial stages).

Contraindications

  • Children's age (due to the lack of necessary data on the safety and efficacy of the drug in this age group of patients);
  • Hypersensitivity to drug components.

It is not recommended to use Catalin for lactating and pregnant women, which is due to the lack of sufficient data on its safety and effectiveness in this group of patients.

Instructions for the use of Catalina: method and dosage

Catalin should be used conjunctivally.

Immediately before use, 1 tablet should be dissolved in 15 ml of solvent.

Single dose - 1-2 drops, frequency of application - 3-5 times a day.

The duration of therapy is determined individually by the doctor.

Side effects

During the use of Catalin drops, such side effects can develop as: blepharitis, diffuse superficial keratitis, conjunctival hyperemia, itching, burning pain in the eye, conjunctivitis, contact dermatitis, lacrimation, irritation, discharge from the eyes, blurred vision, foreign body feeling and discomfort in the eye.

Also, during therapy, allergic reactions may occur, which is associated with the parabens that are part of the drug.

With the development of undesirable reactions, the use of Catalin should be interrupted.

special instructions

Do not touch the tip of the bottle with the eye during instillation.

When using the drug immediately after removing the bottle from a cool place (especially in cases where a small amount of the product remains in the bottle), the solution can be poured out in a stream, and not drip. To avoid this, before the procedure, you should warm the solution by holding the bottle in your hand for a while.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms

To date, reliable studies of the drug's ability to influence vehicle management and the performance of complex types of work associated with increased concentration and concentration of attention have not been conducted.

Drug interactions

There are no data on the interaction of Catalin drops with other drugs.

When administered simultaneously with other local ophthalmic drugs, the interval between their use should be at least 5 minutes.

Simultaneous administration with eye drops containing metal ions (silver solutions, Collargol, zinc sulfates) is not recommended, since Catalin changes color in their presence.

Reviews about Catalina

According to reviews, Catalin quickly improves the condition of patients and is quite effective at the initial stage of cataract. Some patients note that with the standard instillation of 2 drops of the drug 4 times a day for 2-3 months, no progress of the disease is observed, which sometimes makes it possible to avoid surgical intervention. However, for many patients, the dosage form of Catalin seems inconvenient in daily use.
