Drotaverine is a synthetic drug that reduces the tone of smooth muscles of internal organs and helps to reduce pain in spasms of various organs.

pharmachologic effect

The active ingredient is Drotaverine hydrochloride. Refers to antispasmodic drugs of myotropic action. Expands blood vessels and reduces the tone of smooth muscles of the genitourinary and biliary system, organs of the gastrointestinal tract and intestinal peristalsis. Improves oxygen supply to organs and tissues.

Has greater efficiency and duration of action compared to papaverine, with which it is similar in pharmacological action and chemical structure. It is evenly distributed in tissues and has a vasodilating effect.

With oral administration, Drotaverin reaches its maximum concentration within 45-60 minutes.

Release form

The drug is available in the form of tablets, coated tablets and solution for injection.

Drotaverin tablets are round, chamfered and scored, yellow-green in color. Each tablet contains 40 mg of active ingredient. Excipients: povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone), potato starch, milk sugar, talc and magnesium stearate. 10 pieces in a blister, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 blisters in a cardboard box or 100 pieces in a polymer can and a cardboard box.

Drotaverin Forte tablets contain 80 mg of active ingredient. 10 pieces in a blister, 2 blisters in a cardboard box.

Injection. 1 ml of solution contains 20 mg of drotaverine hydrochloride. In ampoules of 2 ml, 5 ampoules in cell packs, 2 packs in a cardboard box.

Indications for the use of Drotaverin

The use of Drotaverine is indicated to reduce pain and relieve spasm of smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary and biliary organs with:

Pylorospasm;
Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum;
Gastroduodenitis;
Spasmodic constipation and renal colitis;
Proktyte;
Pielitis;
Tenesmus;
Biliary or intestinal colic;
Disorder of the biliary system and gallbladder of the hyperkinetic type;
Cholecystitis;
Postcholecystectomy syndrome.

In the treatment of spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, Drotaverin is used as part of a combination therapy.

Also, according to the instructions, Drotaverin is effective:

In gynecology with dysmenorrhea (painful periods), the threat of miscarriage and premature birth, postpartum contractions;
To relieve vascular spasms with tensor headache;
When carrying out some diagnostic manipulations and instrumental studies, cholecystography.

Contraindications

According to the instructions, Drotaverin is contraindicated in:

Hypersensitivity to drug components;
Congenital lactose intolerance and lactase deficiency (due to the presence of lactose monohydar in Drotaverine);
Severe heart failure;
Severe hepatic and renal failure.

Drotaverin is not prescribed for children under 2 years of age and during lactation.

The drug is used with caution with low blood pressure, severe atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries, angle-closure glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, during pregnancy.

Instructions for the use of Drotaverin

Drotaverin tablets are taken orally, without crushing or chewing. The time of taking the drug does not depend on the time of the meal. The duration of the course is determined individually in each case by the doctor.

The dose of the drug depends on age:

From 2 to 6 years old - 10-20 mg up to twice a day;
From 6 to 12 years old - 20 mg up to twice a day;
Children over 12 years old and adults - 40-80 mg 2-3 times a day. Usually the maximum daily dose should not exceed 240 mg.

Drotaverine hydrochloride solution for injection is administered intramuscularly. The duration and dose are also calculated individually.

The usual adult dose is 2-4 ml 1 to 3 times a day.

With hepatic or renal colic, slow intravenous administration is possible. For this, 2-4 ml are preliminarily diluted with 0.9% sodium chloride solution.

In rare cases, with violations of the peripheral circulation, the drug is slowly administered intraarterially.

Teenagers over 12 years old are usually prescribed 1-2 ml of the drug 1-3 times a day.

During physiological childbirth, women are usually prescribed 2 ml of the drug intramuscularly at the beginning of the period of cervical dilatation. If necessary, re-enter another 2 ml after 2 hours.

In case of stomach and duodenal ulcers, Drotaverin is prescribed in combination with other antiulcer drugs.

Side effects

Drotaverine is usually well tolerated. In rare cases, some side effects may develop:

Vomiting or nausea;
Fainting, disturbed sleep and wakefulness, the development of excessive sweating, headache;
Arrhythmia, tachycardia, decreased blood pressure, or feeling hot;
Bronchospasm and slight swelling of the nasal mucosa;
Itching, Quincke's edema, skin rash, allergic dermatitis.

With intravenous administration of Drotaverin, a decrease in blood pressure and respiratory depression is sometimes observed.

Drotaverine enhances the action of bendazole, papaverine and other antispasmodics, and also reduces the spasmogenic activity of morphine. When used simultaneously with levodopa, it weakens the effect of the latter. In combination with phenobarbital, the antispasmodic effect of Drotaverin increases.

There are no data on drug overdose.

Storage conditions

Drotaverine can be purchased without a medical prescription.

Shelf life of tablets is 3 years, solution for injection is 2 years.
