Ipecacuana is a herbaceous plant native to Brazil. It is widely used in folk and official medicine and belongs to the group of homeopathic medicines.
Pharmacological action of Ipecacuanha
Ipecacuana in the form of a medicine is an exclusively herbal remedy. Ipecacuana roots contain a fairly large amount of citric and malic acid, alkaloids (including emetine, ametamine, psychotrine, cephaelin and protoeietin), choline, saponins, ipecacuanine glycoside and phytosterol.
The preparation based on the roots of the plant has a good expectorant effect due to the ability of the plant to thin phlegm, reflexively increase the secretory function of the bronchial glands, and also increase the activity of the villi of the respiratory tract epithelium.
It is noted that in large doses, preparations on the root of ipecac can cause irritation in the gastric mucosa, which can lead to prolonged nausea followed by a period of vomiting.

Powder, infusion and decoction are made from the root of the plant, which are used in small doses for medicinal purposes.
