Herbion ivy syrup is a phytopreparation for coughing, which has a mucolytic, expectorant and bronchospasmolytic effect, which reduces the viscosity of sputum and promotes its discharge.
Release form and composition
Dosage form of the drug - syrup: yellowish-brown liquid with a specific odor, opalescence is possible (150 ml each in dark glass vials, sealed with plastic stoppers with a liquid divider and plastic caps with first opening control, in a cardboard box 1 bottle complete with a dosing bottle spoon made of plastic and instructions for the use of Herbion ivy syrup).
1 ml of syrup contains:
- active substance: ivy leaves dry extract [made from Hedera helix L., Araliaceae family, folium and ethanol 30% (extractant) in a ratio of 5-7.5: 1] - 7 mg;
- additional components: liquid sorbitol (E420), glycerol (E422), sodium benzoate (E211), citric acid monohydrate (E330), aromatic balm [propylene glycol (E1520), ethanol (E1510), citronella, coriander and lemon oils, citral from Litsea cubeba], purified water.

Herbion ivy syrup is an herbal cough medicine. It has an expectorant, bronchospasmolytic and mucolytic effect.
Taking the drug helps to reduce the viscosity of sputum and its discharge.
Pharmacokinetics
The syrup contains a dry plant extract of ivy leaves (including triterpene saponins) as a biologically active component, therefore, it is not possible to study its pharmacokinetic characteristics.
Indications for use
Herbion ivy syrup is recommended for use in the complex therapy of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the upper / lower respiratory tract, which are accompanied by a cough with sputum difficult to separate - as an expectorant drug.
Contraindications
- the period of pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding);
- sucrase / isomaltase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome, fructose intolerance;
- hypersensitivity to any component of the drug.
It is contraindicated to prescribe Herbion ivy syrup for children under 2 years of age.
Herbion ivy syrup, instructions for use: method and dosage
The syrup is intended to be taken orally, preferably after a meal.
The recommended dosing regimen for patients of different age categories, provided that the syrup is taken 2 times a day:
- children 2–5 years old: 0.5 dosing spoon (2.5 ml);
- children 6–12 years old: 1 dosing spoon (5 ml);
- adolescents over 12 years of age and adults: 1–1.5 dosing spoon (5–7.5 ml).
Measure the required dose using the plastic dosing spoon included in the kit.
The duration of the course of therapy is 7 days. While taking the drug Herbion ivy syrup, it is recommended to provide the patient with a sufficient amount of warm drink (water, fruit drink, tea, etc.).
On the recommendation of a doctor, a second course is possible.
Side effects
Taking the drug can cause allergic reactions (itching, rash, nausea). It is extremely rare that a laxative effect is possible due to the presence of sorbitol in the composition of the drug.
Overdose
Overdose is possible when taking high doses, 3 times or more higher than the recommended daily intake, as a result of which nausea / vomiting and diarrhea may develop. For the treatment of the condition, you should stop taking the syrup and carry out symptomatic treatment.

The drug contains sorbitol (E420), this should be taken into account by patients with diabetes mellitus: 5 ml of syrup contains 2.5 g of sorbitol, which is equivalent to 0.21 bread units (XE).
