Ornidazole belongs to antiprotozoal agents derived from 5-nitroimidazole. It has a bactericidal (death of microorganisms) and bacteriostatic (stopping the growth of bacteria) action. By biochemical reduction of the 5-nitro group of ornidazole by transport intracellular proteins of anaerobic microorganisms, further interaction of the reduced 5-nitro group with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of bacteria and inhibition of the synthesis of their nucleic acids, death of anaerobic microbes and protozoa occurs.
