Ornisid is a pharmacological drug with antibacterial and antiprotozoal action.

Composition and form of release

Ornisid is available in tablets for oral administration and in the form of suppositories for vaginal administration. The active ingredient is ornidazole. Ornisid tablets contain 250 mg or 500 mg (Ornisid forte) of the active ingredient. Ornisid vaginal suppositories contain 500 mg of ornidazole.

In addition to the active substance, Ornisid tablets include auxiliary components: microcrystalline cellulose, potato starch, magnesium stearate, hydroxymethylethylcellulose. Auxiliary components of vaginal suppositories include lactose, dihydrogen phosphate, anhydrous citric acid, magnesium stearate, PVP, gelatinized starch, corn starch.

Ornisid tablets (250 mg) are available in a blister of 20 pieces, one blister in a cardboard box. Ornisid forte tablets (500 mg) are available in a blister of 10 tablets, 1 blister in a carton box. Ornisid vaginal suppositories are produced in a blister of 3 pieces.

Pharmacological action of Ornisida

According to the instructions, Ornisid has antibacterial and antiprotozoal effects. Ornizadol is a derivative of 5-nitroimidazole, it inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA and thus leads to death of microorganisms.

Ornisid is active against Trichomonas, dysentery amoeba, lamblia, gardenarella, as well as against some anaerobic microorganisms (bacteroids, some clostridia, fusobacteria, anaerobic cocci). Aerobic microorganisms are not sensitive to this drug.

After oral administration, Ornisid is rapidly absorbed according to the instructions, the bioavailability of the drug is high (90%), the maximum concentration in the blood after oral administration is noted after 1-2 hours.

According to the instructions, Ornisid is excreted mainly by the kidneys (about 70%) and intestines (25%). The drug crosses the blood-brain barrier, placenta and breast milk.

Ornisid tablets are recommended for the treatment of trichomoniasis, amebiasis, giardiasis, amoebic dysentery, extraintestinal amebiasis, as well as for the treatment of infections caused by anaerobes. Ornisid tablets can be used to prevent anaerobic infections after bowel surgery and gynecological procedures.

Ornisid vaginal suppositories are recommended for the treatment of urogenital trichomoniasis and nonspecific vaginitis of various origins.

Contraindications to the use of Ornisid

Ornisid tablets are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the constituent components of the drug, the phenomena of liver failure, organic diseases of the nervous system, as well as in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (I trimester) and during lactation.

Ornisid vaginal suppositories are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the constituent components of this drug, as well as in leukopenia, organic diseases of the nervous system (including epilepsy), during the first trimester of pregnancy and during lactation.

According to the instructions, Ornisid should be used with caution in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and in patients with a history of leukopenia.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

Ornisid is contraindicated for use in the first trimester of pregnancy. Ornisid vaginal suppositories can be used with caution in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, only under medical supervision. If a woman who is breastfeeding needs to take this drug, then breastfeeding should be stopped during treatment with Ornisid.

Dosing and administration of Ornisid

Ornisid tablets (250 mg) for trichomoniasis are prescribed 2 times a day, 500 mg each, the course of treatment for this disease is 5 days. For children, the dosage of the drug is calculated based on the weight of the child (25 mg / kg / day).

For anaerobic infections, Ornisid is recommended to use 500 mg 2 times a day.

With amoebic dysentery, this drug is prescribed 1.5-2 g once a day. For children, the dosage is calculated based on the formula 40 mg / kg / day. Duration of treatment is 3 days.

In the treatment of giardiasis, Ornisid is prescribed 1.5 g per day, for children the dose is calculated according to the formula 40 mg / kg / day. The course of treatment is 1-2 days.

For the prevention of anaerobic infections, a single dose of Ornisid is recommended at a dose of 500-1000 mg before surgery, and after surgery, 500 mg 2 times a day for 3-5 days.

Ornisid vaginal suppositories should be inserted deep into the vagina after preliminary hygienic treatment of the external genital area.

With trichomoniasis, 1 Ornisid suppository is prescribed for the night. Usually, intravaginal use is combined with the ingestion of tablets of this drug (1.5 g once or 1 g in essence for 5 days).

Side effect

According to the instructions, Ornisid in rare cases can cause dizziness, tremors, discoordination of movements, convulsions, peripheral neuropathy, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Ornisid overdose

In case of an overdose with this drug, convulsions (similar to epileptic ones), depression, peripheral neuritis may occur. Treatment is symptomatic, with convulsive syndrome, the introduction of diazepam is indicated.

Interaction with other medicinal products

When using Ornisid, it should be borne in mind that this drug enhances the effect of anticoagulants, and prolongs the muscle relaxant effects of vecuronium bromide.

According to the instructions, Ornisid is compatible with alcohol intake.

Special instructions for the use of Ornisid

When treating urogenital trichomoniasis, it is necessary to treat both partners at once, in order to avoid reinfection.
