Bactrim is a combined antimicrobial agent.

pharmachologic effect

Bactrim contains trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.

Bactrim exhibits a bactericidal effect, activity against streptococci, meningococci, staphylococci, gonococci, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, cholera vibrios, Haemophilus influenzae, Listeria, pertussis, fecal enterococci, Klebsiella, brucella serum, cytrobacterium bacteria morganella, chlamydia, plasmodia, toxoplasma, pathogenic fungi, actinomycetes, histoplasmosis, causative agents of nocardiosis, tularemia, legionellosis, pneumocystis pneumonia, coccidioidosis.

Coryneform bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the causative agent of tuberculosis, viruses show resistance to Bactrim.

The therapeutic effect of Bactrim lasts 7 hours.

Release form

Bactrim is produced in the form of an infusion solution, syrup, tablets. There is also Bactrim suspension for internal use and for children.

Indications for use

In the Bactrim instructions, indications for its use are the following diseases:

  • infections of the genitourinary system: cystitis, pelonephritis, urethritis, inguinal granuloma, gonorrhea, prostatitis, pyelitis, epididymitis, chancre, lymphogranuloma venereum;
  • Gastrointestinal infections: cholera, cholangitis, typhoid fever, gastroenteritis, salmonella, cholecystitis caused by enterotoxic strains of Escherichia coli, dysentery, paratyphoid fever;
  • ENT infections: sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, scarlet fever, laryngitis;
  • respiratory tract infections: pneumocystis pneumonia, chronic and acute bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchiectasis, bronchopneumonia;
  • infections of the skin, soft tissues: pyoderma, acne, wound infections, furunculosis;
  • osteoarticular infections;
  • brucellosis;
  • blastomycosis South American;
  • toxoplasmosis;
  • malaria

Instructions for using Bactrim

According to the instructions, Bactrim is taken after meals twice a day (usually in the morning, in the evening), washed down with water.

Bactrim for children over 12 yrs. and adults are prescribed to take 4 tablets (or 8 tablespoons of measured syrup) - a daily dose.

Suspension Bactrim or syrup is often given to children under 12 liters. Suspension Bactrim (like syrup) are prescribed in the following dosages: from 6 weeks. up to 5 months - half a spoon measuring two rubles / day; 6m. - 5 l. - one spoonful of measured two rubles / day; 5 - 12 liters. - two measuring spoons two rubles / day.

The course of treatment with Bactrim according to the instructions lasts from 5 days. up to two weeks. If the infection is chronic, treatment with Bactrim is prolonged, and the dosages are determined by the doctor based on the conclusions about the course of the disease.

Side effects of Bactrim

When using a suspension of Bactrim, its other pharmacological forms, side reactions from different body systems are possible:

  • urinary: interstitial nephritis, increased urea concentration, impaired renal function, hematuria, polyuria, toxic nephropathy with oliguria and anuria, hypercreatininemia, crystalluria;
  • hematopoietic: neutropenia, megaloblastic anemia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia;
  • musculoskeletal: myalgia, arthralgia;
  • respiratory: pulmonary infiltrates, bronchospasm;
  • nervous: dizziness, headaches. Sometimes - depression, tremor, meningitis, aseptic, apathy, peripheral neuritis;
  • digestive: pseudomembranous enterocolitis, abdominal pain, increased activity of hepatic transaminases, vomiting, impaired appetite, nausea, gastritis, stomatitis, hepatonecrosis, diarrhea, hepatitis, glossitis, cholestasis;

Hypoglycemia and allergic manifestations of varying severity are also possible.

Contraindications

According to the instructions, Bactrim is not prescribed for sensitivity to it (including sulfa drugs), renal and hepatic insufficiency, leukopenia, deficiency and aplastic anemia, pregnancy and lactation, agranulocytosis, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. In children, Bactrim can cause hyperbilirubinemia.

Bactrim is not prescribed to premature babies in the first 6 weeks.

In the instructions of Bactrim, it is indicated that it is prescribed with caution in diseases of the thyroid gland, in bronchial asthma, folic acid deficiency.
