The labia majora are two folds of skin located on the sides of the genital slit.

Their main function is mechanical protection of the vagina from negative environmental factors, as well as maintaining the required temperature in the female genital organs. Because of this, they contain a lot of fat cells, and with the onset of puberty, hair begins to grow from the outside, which also contributes to maintaining the required temperature regime.

The labia majora contains few nerve endings, so they are not an erogenous zone. In their thickness are located: adipose tissue, Bartholin's glands, venous plexuses.

Often the skin on them is pigmented and different in shade from the rest of the skin of the body. In many girls, they are not large in size, sometimes even smaller than the relatively large labia minora. This refers to the individual characteristics of a person and is not a deviation from the norm.

It is very important to observe personal hygiene, as sweat and sebaceous glands tend to become inflamed, resulting in cysts of the sebaceous glands or boils of hair follicles.

Small labia

The labia minora are part of the vulva (external female genital organs) and are two folds of skin located under the labia majora in the longitudinal direction. The small lips are the same color as the inner surface of the large ones. In girls, they are often bright pink; their free edges often protrude through the genital gap.

The base of the labia minora is separated from the large ones by the interlabial groove. In front, each small lip has two legs - an internal and an external one. The inner legs of the lips are connected to each other and from the back are attached to the head of the clitoris, forming the frenum of the clitoris. And the outer legs are connected to the back of the clitoris, forming the foreskin of the clitoris from the side of its upper surface.

Labia during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the labia change. This is a normal and natural process. This is due to a change in the hormonal background of the body. Blood circulation in the pelvic organs is significantly increased, as a result of which the labia grows in size during pregnancy.

Inflammation of the labia majora

About a week after conception, they swell, become elastic and juicy, which often causes varicose veins in them. In addition to veins, all kinds of seals often pop out on them.

As a rule, all these signs disappear without a trace even before childbirth.

What diseases cause burning and itching of the labia?

Often burning, pain and itching of the labia can be signs of various kinds of infections:

  • Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease manifested as a result of the activity of the vaginal Trichomonas. Often, in this case, yellowish discharge with an unpleasant odor is added to the above symptoms.
  • Candidiasis is a disease of the genital mucosa that occurs under the influence of the yeast-like fungi Candida.
  • Gardnerellosis is a vaginal dysbiosis. This disease often occurs with frequent changes in sexual partners, as well as with the use of condoms, long-term use of antibiotics and birth control pills, which contain 9-nonoxynol.
  • Vulvovaginitis is an inflammatory disease of the labia, which often occurs when personal hygiene is not observed.

The lack of immediate treatment for these diseases can lead to the development of complications, including female infertility. Therefore, if there is a burning sensation, pain and itching in the labia, it is recommended to consult a gynecologist.

Pimples on the labia

Often, pimples on the labia are the result of poor personal hygiene. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that infection does not occur, since if the wen becomes inflamed, then it can only be removed surgically.

Subcutaneous tubercles may appear on the labia, which pop up due to a violation of the body's production of protective cells, that is, due to a decrease in the immunity of the vaginal sphere.

Painful red pimples pop up under the influence of the following factors:

  • Frequent stress and constant lack of sleep. This leads to a violation of the nervous system of the body, which is why acne pops up.
  • Endocrine diseases, hormonal disorders.

If you have large red pimples on your labia, it is best to see a doctor.
