Solution for intramuscular injection Artogistan
Solution for intramuscular injection Artogistan

Artogistan is a drug that stimulates the regeneration of cartilage tissue.

Release form and composition

Dosage form - solution for intramuscular (i / m) administration: slightly colored or colorless, transparent or slightly opalescent, with the smell of benzyl alcohol (1 or 2 ml each in colorless glass ampoules, 5 or 10 ampoules in blisters, in cardboard a pack, respectively, 2 or 1 contour packaging and instructions for the use of Artogistan).

Composition of 1 ml solution:

  • active substance: chondroitin sodium sulfate - 100 mg;
  • auxiliary components: sodium disulfite, sodium hydroxide (1M solution), benzyl alcohol, water for injection.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

The active component of Artogistan is sodium chondroitin sulfate, which has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, chondrostimulating and regenerating effects.

The drug inhibits enzymes that cause degeneration of the articular cartilage. Strengthens metabolic processes in the subchondral bone, fibrous and hyaline cartilage. Stimulates the production of proteoglycans by chondrocytes. Participates in the construction of the basic substance of bone and cartilage tissue. Suppresses the secretion of leukotrienes and prostaglandins, reduces the release of inflammatory mediators and pain factors into the synovial fluid. Reduces calcium loss, slows down bone resorption and accelerates bone recovery.

Artogistan slows down the progression of diseases such as osteochondrosis and osteoarthritis. It normalizes the production of joint fluid, prevents the collapse of connective tissue, helps to restore the cartilaginous surfaces and the articular capsule of the joints. Reduces pain in the affected joints and improves their mobility.

The therapeutic effect of the drug persists for a long time after the end of the treatment course. With degenerative changes in the joints with secondary synovitis, the effect of therapy is manifested already after 2-3 weeks.

Chondroitin sulfate has a structural similarity to heparin, therefore it is assumed that it can prevent the formation of fibrin thrombi in the synovial and subchondral microvasculature.

Pharmacokinetics

15 minutes after the i / m administration of Artogistan chondroitin sulfate in significant concentrations is found in the synovial fluid, after 30 minutes - in the blood. The maximum concentration (Cmax) in the blood is observed after 1 hour, over the next 2 days the level of the drug in the blood gradually decreases.

Chondroitin sulfate accumulates mainly in cartilage tissue (Cmax in articular cartilage is reached within 48 hours). The synovium does not interfere with the penetration of the drug into the articular cavity.

It is excreted by the kidneys.

Indications for use

  • degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the joints and spine: osteoarthritis and osteochondrosis of the spine;
  • fractures (in order to accelerate the formation of callus).

Contraindications

  • thrombophlebitis;
  • active bleeding or the presence of risk factors for bleeding;
  • age up to 18 years;
  • hypersensitivity to any component of Artogistan.

Artogistan, instructions for use: method and dosage

Artogistan is indicated for intramuscular injection.

Adult patients are prescribed 1 ml of solution (100 mg of chondroitin sulfate) every other day. With good tolerance of the drug from the fourth injection, the dose is increased to 200 mg (2 ml).

The therapeutic course consists of 25–35 injections. A repeated course, if necessary, can be carried out after 6 months.

Side effects

  • allergic reactions: rash, urticaria, erythema, dermatitis, pruritus, edema;
  • local reactions: bleeding at the injection site.

Overdose

To date, no cases of drug overdose have been reported.

special instructions

The course of treatment should consist of at least 25 injections - so much is needed to achieve a stable clinical effect. The effect of the drug lasts for several months, therefore, repeated courses in order to prevent exacerbations are recommended to be carried out at intervals of 6 months.

If necessary, the simultaneous use of antiplatelet agents, indirect anticoagulants or fibrinolytics, blood clotting indicators should be carefully monitored.

In case of hemorrhages or allergic reactions, Artogistan should be canceled.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms

The components of the drug do not have the ability to affect the psychophysical and cognitive functions of a person.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

Artogistan is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

If it is necessary to conduct a course of therapy during lactation, breastfeeding should be discontinued, since there is no information on the safety of using chondroitin sulfate for infants.

Pediatric use

Artogistan is contraindicated in patients under the age of 18, due to the lack of data confirming the efficacy and safety of chondroitin sulfate in children and adolescents.

Drug interactions

Chondroitin sulfate can enhance the effects of fibrinolytics, antiplatelet agents, and indirect anticoagulants.
