Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
The drug is characterized by a detoxification effect, which manifests itself, among other things, in relation to arsenous substances, heavy metals and their compounds, products of ethyl alcohol metabolism. The antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Zorex, confirmed by clinical studies, are due to the presence of sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate in its composition. Its active sulfhydryl groups interact with the metabolic products of alcohol (ethanol) and thiol poisons contained in tissues and blood. The result is the formation of complexes - non-toxic compounds that are excreted in the urine.
When taken orally, sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate enters the portal bloodstream and along with it enters the liver, where it quickly and irreversibly binds to acetaldehyde. This process contributes to the subsequent elimination of ethanol from other tissues and organs.
Sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate is also an activator of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, accelerating the oxidation of ethyl alcohol and the detoxification of its products with toxic properties by the liver enzyme system. Calcium pantothenate, which is part of Zorex, enhances the detoxification effect of sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate. Pantothenic acid stimulates regeneration processes, accelerates the formation of corticosteroids and is an important element of fat and carbohydrate metabolism.
Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration of the Zorex capsule, which contains 250 mg of sodium 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulfonate, the maximum concentration of the active component of the drug in the blood is reached after about 1.5 hours and ranges from 90 to 140 mg / l. On average, the drug is completely excreted from the body after 9–11 hours (range of variation 10.16 ± 0.39 hours). The residence time of sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate in the gastrointestinal tract is 15–20 minutes. The half-life of the drug is 7.5 ± 0.46 hours. Calcium pantothenate is well absorbed in the intestines and is degraded with the release of pantothenic acid. Approximately 60% of the drug is excreted through the kidneys, and it is also partially excreted through the intestines.
