The table of TSH norms by age in men shows the reference, that is, those within the normal range, indicators of thyroid-stimulating hormone - one of the most important in the body.
Endocrinological disorders for a long time can hide behind the mask of other pathological processes. An analysis to determine the level of hormones allows you to identify the true cause of deteriorating health. The concentration of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, thyrotropin) in the blood can tell the doctor a lot.
Determining the level of TSH, you can identify abnormalities in the functioning of the thyroid gland
Table: TSH norms
The rate of thyroid-stimulating hormone in men depends on age. This dependence is presented in the table:
Age | Rate indicator |
Newborn | From 1 to 40 mU / l |
2 months | From 1.7 to 9.2 mU / L |
6 months | From 0.5 to 10.1 mU / l |
5 years | 0.3 to 6.1 mU / L |
15 years | 0.3 to 5.1 mU / l |
16 to 55 years old | 0.3 to 4.1 mU / l |
Over 55 years old | From 0.4 to 9.0 mU / l |
Despite the apparent ease of determination, only a specialist should evaluate the result of a blood test for TSH, in particular, because the identified deviations are not always due to pathological reasons. For example, an increase in thyrotropin levels can be observed in the following cases:
- significant physical activity;
- taking certain medications (corticosteroids, antipsychotics, iodides, beta-blockers);
- intoxication;
- surgical interventions;
- severe stress.
Thyroid stimulating hormone and its functions
TSH is produced by cells of the anterior pituitary gland and is the main regulator of the hormone-forming function of the thyroid gland. Its main biological role is to regulate the level of thyroid hormones - thyroxine and triiodothyronine, regulation is carried out according to the principle of feedback. Let's consider this mechanism in more detail.
As soon as the concentration of thyroid hormones decreases in the body, the hypothalamus begins to secrete a hormone called thyroid-stimulating releasing. It reaches the pituitary gland with blood flow and enhances the secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone by cells, which in turn enhances the production of thyroid hormones by thyroid cells. At the same time, with an increase in the level of thyroxine and triiodothyronine in the blood, the concentration of TSH decreases.
Thus, the determination of the TSH indicator demonstrates the relationship in the work of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid gland system and is of great importance in the diagnosis of various hormonal disorders.
In addition to regulating the secretion of thyroid hormones, thyrotropin performs other functions in the human body, the most important of which are:
- acceleration of the synthesis of phospholipids, nucleic acids and proteins;
- regulation of the uptake of iodine contained in blood plasma by thyroid cells.
Thyrotropin is considered by specialists as a marker of thyroid dysfunction.
How to donate blood for TSH correctly
For the correct diagnosis and treatment, it is necessary to properly prepare for the test:
- Blood must be donated strictly on an empty stomach. After the last meal, at least 6 hours should pass, so it is most convenient to take the test in the morning after a night's sleep.
- You should stop smoking 48 hours before the visit to the laboratory, as the effect of nicotine on the blood supply to the brain can cause an unreliable result.
- Limit active sports activities 48 hours before the study. This is due to the fact that during physical exertion, the tissues of the body begin to experience an increased need for oxygen and nutrients. To cover it, the thyroid gland must increase the secretion of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Therefore, there is a need to increase the level of TSH, since the level of these hormones depends on each other.
- You cannot donate blood for thyrotropin against the background of stressful conditions. Nervous strain causes an increase in the secretion of hormones by the adrenal cortex. They are responsible for certain changes in the biochemical composition of the blood, which means that the result obtained cannot be considered reliable.
During the day, there is a natural fluctuation in the level of TSH in the blood. Therefore, if the doctor prescribes a second test, for example, to assess the effectiveness of the therapy, then it must be taken at the same time as the first one. Compliance with this condition plays an important role in the correct diagnosis of thyroid diseases.
Indications for research
If the study of the hormonal status reveals that the indicators of thyroid hormones in men do not fit into the norm, they study, first of all, TSH.
Thus, a study of the level of TSH and thyroid hormones is necessary if you suspect the development of a hypothyroid or hyperthyroid state, the signs of which are:
Sign | Hypothyroidism | Hyperthyroidism |
Pulse | Bradycardia (less than 60 beats per minute) | Tachycardia (over 90 beats per minute), arrhythmia |
Hair condition | Hair loss, increased fragility, dryness | Thinning hair, earlier appearance of gray hair |
Perception of temperature | Abomination | Poor heat tolerance |
Body weight | Being overweight with a normal diet | Being underweight with a normal diet |
Appetite | Decreases | Rising |
Digestion | Nausea, flatulence, tendency to constipation | Constipation alternating with diarrhea |
Cholesterol level | Promoted | More often corresponds to the variant of the norm |
Sexual function | Decreased libido | Decreased libido |
Central nervous system | Depressed mood, depression. Slowing down thinking and speech | Increasing weakness, sleep disturbances |
Blood pressure | Reduced | Increased |
Eyeball condition | Without features | Ophthalmic eyes, photophobia |
The causes of hypo- or hyperthyroidism can be:
- goiter;
- pituitary tumors;
- thyroiditis;
- adrenal tumor;
- mental disorders;
- general depletion of the body.
Why is the deviation of TSH from the norm in men dangerous?
Unfortunately, many men experience symptoms of hormonal imbalance in honey. the institution does not apply in a timely manner. They believe that the symptoms that have appeared in them are not the result of a disease, but of ordinary fatigue, and with good rest it will go away on its own. However, with a long-lasting deviation of the TSH level from the normal value, the patient's quality of life deteriorates significantly.
Thyrotropin imbalance can cause erectile dysfunction
An imbalance in the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid gland system eventually leads to a weakening of libido, erectile dysfunction. Against this background, disorders from the central nervous system develop:
- depressed mood;
- depression;
- sleep disorders;
- decrease in general working capacity.
In addition, erectile dysfunction often causes serious problems in family life.
Deviation of TSH from the norm can cause osteoporosis in men. In this disease, calcium salts are washed out of the bone tissue. As a result, the bones become brittle and, under the influence of even minor mechanical trauma, fractures occur, which heal with difficulty. Osteoporosis is difficult to treat and can lead to disability.
