Stoptussin is a two-component drug that has an expectorant and bronchodilator effect.

Release form and composition

Dosage forms of release of Stoptussin:

  • tablets: flat-cylindrical, have a dividing line and a chamfer, color - almost white or white (in blisters of 10 pcs., in a cardboard box 2 blisters);
  • drops for oral administration: viscous, transparent, color - from yellowish-brown to yellow (in dark glass bottles with a polyethylene dropper volume of 10, 25, 50 ml, in a cardboard box 1 bottle).

Active ingredients in 1 tablet:

  • butamirate dihydrogen citrate - 4 mg;
  • guaifenesin -100 mg.

Additional components: mannitol - 60 mg, glyceryl tribegenate - 1 mg, microcrystalline cellulose - 60 mg, colloidal silicon dioxide - 1 mg, magnesium stearate - 4 mg.

Active ingredients in 10 ml drops for oral administration:

  • butamirate dihydrogen citrate - 40 mg;
  • guaifenesin - 1000 mg.

Additional components: liquid licorice extract - 30 mg, 96% ethanol - 3000 mg, polysorbate 80 - 10 mg, purified water - 70 mg, flower flavor (alpine flower aroma) - 20 mg, propylene glycol - up to 10 ml.

Indications for use

Stoptussin is prescribed for the treatment of dry and irritating coughs, including those developed in infectious and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract (upper / lower).

Oral drops are also used to relieve coughs in the pre- and postoperative periods.

Contraindications

  • myasthenia gravis;
  • age up to 6 months (for oral drops) or 12 years (for tablets);
  • I trimester of pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding;
  • hypersensitivity to the substances that make up the drug.

In the II-III trimesters of pregnancy, before prescribing Stoptussin, the doctor must assess the intended benefits of therapy for the patient and the possible risk to the fetus.

Method of administration and dosage

The drug in all dosage forms is taken orally, preferably after a meal.

Pills

Stoptussin should be taken without chewing, whole, washed down with water, tea, fruit juice or other liquid.

Adults and children over 12 years old are usually prescribed (single dose / frequency of administration):

  • up to 50 kg: 1/2 pcs. / 4 times a day;
  • 50–70 kg: 1 piece / 3 times a day;
  • 70–90 kg: 1 ½ pcs. / 3 times a day;
  • from 90 kg: 1 ½ pcs. / 4 times a day.

A break of 4 to 6 hours must be observed between doses of a single dose.

Oral drops

A single dose before taking should be dissolved in water, tea, fruit juice in a volume of 100 ml.

Adults and children from 6 months are usually prescribed (single dose / frequency of use):

  • up to 7 kg: 8 drops / 3-4 times a day;
  • 7-12 kg: 9 drops / 3-4 times a day;
  • 12–20 kg: 14 drops / 3 times a day;
  • 20-30 kg: 14 drops / 3-4 times a day;
  • 30-40 kg: 16 drops / 3-4 times a day;
  • 40-50 kg: 25 drops / 3 times a day;
  • 50–70 kg: 30 drops / 3 times a day;
  • more than 70 kg: 40 drops / 3 times a day.

A break of 6 to 8 hours should be observed between doses of a single dose.

The effectiveness of Stopussin increases with the use of a large amount of liquid.

Children weighing up to 7 kg should not increase the recommended concentration of the drug even when the dose is reduced (in cases where the child does not drink the prepared mixture in full).

If Stoptussin is not effective enough, you should consult a doctor.

For accurate dosing, it is recommended to use a syringe that is placed vertically into the adapter on the neck of the bottle. The bottle must be turned upside down, after which, holding the syringe tightly, dial the required dose.

Side effects

In most cases, subject to the recommended dosage regimen, Stopussin is well tolerated. Approximately 1% of patients develop disorders in the form of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, stomach pain, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, urticaria and skin rash. As a rule, these adverse reactions are reversible and go away on their own without dose reduction.

Also, during the course of taking Stoptussin, other disorders may develop (> 10% - very often;> 1% and 0.1% and 0.01% and <0.1% - rarely; <0.01%, taking into account individual messages - rarely):

  • nervous system: often - anorexia, headache;
  • digestive system: often - nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • organ of balance and hearing: often - dizziness;
  • subcutaneous fat and skin: very rarely - skin rash, itching, urticaria.

Additionally for tablets:

  • digestive system: very rarely - heartburn, bitter taste in the mouth, a feeling of heaviness in the epigastric region;
  • respiratory system: very rarely - shortness of breath;
  • cardiovascular system: rarely - chest pain; very rarely - palpitations, tachycardia;
  • others: very rarely - hot flashes, pain around the eyes.

Additionally for oral drops: from the urinary system - urolithiasis (very rare).

If symptoms persist, consideration should be given to changing therapy.

Stoptussin is not indicated for use in productive cough in patients with prolonged / chronic cough (including due to smoking), bronchitis or emphysema.

Drinking alcoholic beverages during treatment is not recommended.

Stopussin oral drops contain 36.6% by volume ethanol.

Because of the potential for dizziness and other side effects, caution should be exercised when driving or performing work that requires an increased mental / physical response.

Drug interactions

The effect of the use of Stopussin is enhanced when combined with lithium and magnesium preparations.

Stopussin enhances the effect of the following drugs:

  • sedatives, hypnotics, general anesthetics (for the central nervous system);
  • paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid (pain reliever);
  • muscle relaxants;
  • ethanol.

When conducting studies to determine the concentration of acids such as vanilla almond and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic, using nitrosonaphthol as a reagent, falsely increased results may be obtained. Before collecting urine for this test (no later than 48 hours), the drug must be discontinued.

Terms and conditions of storage

Store in a dark place at temperatures up to 25 ° C. Keep out of the reach of children.
