Ichthyol suppositories and ointment for hemorrhoids
Anal suppositories, they are also anal suppositories from ichthyol, are sold in 10 pieces in a blister. They are brown or brown in color, dense, have a characteristic pungent smell of ichthyol. Since candles melt at body temperature, store them in a cool place to prevent spreading.
Ichthyol suppositories for hemorrhoids are highly effective and at the same time safe
Each candle contains ichthyol and medical petroleum jelly directly - a minimum of components minimizes the possibility of developing an allergic reaction.
After a bowel movement or a cleansing enema, wash the anogenital area thoroughly, and then insert a suppository into the rectum while lying on its side. The dose depends on the stage of hemorrhoids, but usually one suppository is administered 1-2 times a day. It is recommended to use the suppository at bedtime and in the morning if no active movements are expected for several hours after use. One candle dissolves completely in 12 hours, which provides a long-lasting effect.
The ointment is available in two forms - with 10% and 20% ichthyol content, in black glass jars or aluminum tubes. The storage rules are identical to those of rectal suppositories. With hemorrhoids, it is used in two ways:
- In its pure form, the ointment is applied in a thin layer on the outer surface of the anus, as well as on the internal and external hemorrhoids, on the rectal mucosa until a feeling of warmth appears. Slight redness in the area of application is acceptable.
- In the form of a glycerin lotion, ichthyol ointment has a softening effect, does not cause hyperemia of the mucous membrane and lasts longer. The lotion is prepared as follows: mix 20% ichthyol ointment and glycerin in a 1: 1 ratio, and then apply in the same way as ordinary heparin ointment, or form small tampons from cotton wool, moisten them with an ichthyol-glycerin mixture and inject into the anus without more than half.
After applying the medicine, you can apply a thick piece of gauze on top. After completing the procedure, you must thoroughly wash your hands to avoid getting the active substance in your eyes and mouth.
The action of ichthyol suppositories and ointments
Ichthyol provides anti-inflammatory effect, reduces edema and hyperemia of the plethoric mucosa. Due to the warming properties, it reflexively expands the lumen of blood vessels, improves local circulation and tissue trophism, maintains vascular tone, therefore suppositories with ichthyol for hemorrhoids prevent blood stagnation in the veins of the hemorrhoidal plexus. The ointment has a softening effect on the inflamed mucous membrane, slowing down the keratinization processes (ichthyol denatures old dead proteins), restores the elasticity of the rectal mucosa due to the regeneration of the elastic layer.
As a result, the agent anesthetizes the skin and mucous membrane on the applied area, reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings, kills infectious agents, prevents further contamination by the ascending route, one of the complications of hemorrhoids.
Therapy with ichthyol ointment for hemorrhoids is more appropriate for external manifestations of the disease, while for internal it is better to use candles that penetrate deeper and are not washed off with linen, providing a longer exposure.

The instructions for ichthyol suppositories for hemorrhoids indicate that the use of this agent is effective in treating the following conditions:
- internal and external hemorrhoids - to increase blood flow, restore the vascular wall, its tone;
- inflammation of hemorrhoids - to reduce the inflammatory response in the tissues, local bactericidal action, reduce pain;

Contraindications and side effects
Due to the monocomponent composition, side effects are rare. Basically, the use of drugs based on ichthyol is contraindicated in the presence of hypersensitivity or intolerance reactions to one of the ingredients, while allergies, increased itching, sensitization, irritation in the affected area are possible. In case of an allergic reaction, it is necessary to remove the ointment from the skin and mucous membranes and take an antihistamine.
Ichthyol ointment is more often used for external hemorrhoids, and suppositories for internal
If the use of the drug causes a painful symptom, weakness, malaise, burning sensation and discomfort, it is possible to assume individual intolerance and discontinue the drug.
When ichthyol ointment gets into the mouth, gastric lavage and the intake of sorbents are indicated.
Ichthyol enters the bloodstream through the mucous membrane and skin and, after local exposure, is rapidly metabolized. Therefore, the agent does not cause any systemic disorders, except for local irritation. Do not apply the product when bleeding, as getting the medicine on an open wound surface can cause pain and irritation.
The instruction for ichthyol suppositories states that one should refrain from combining suppositories and ointments with other local anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics - the components can create unexpected insoluble compounds. It can only be combined with inert ointments.
The use of ichthyol ointment and suppositories for hemorrhoids in pregnant and breastfeeding women
Separately, it is worth considering the use of ointments and suppositories during pregnancy, because hemorrhoids often complicate the course of the postpartum period in more than 50% of women. There is no data on the dangers of ichthyol during pregnancy and lactation - the drug is harmless and does not have a toxic effect on the fetus. Do not allow the substance to come into contact with the nipple halo - this can lead to burns.
