Abortion at 5 weeks

An abortion at 5 weeks is an early termination of pregnancy.

An abortion is considered an interruption up to the 22nd week of pregnancy - after this period, the fetus becomes viable, and the termination, in fact, is an artificially induced premature birth.

Abortion methods at week 5

A short-term abortion can be done medically, surgically or by vacuum aspiration.

At 2 months of pregnancy, an abortion with medication is perhaps the safest and most painless. It is permissible to do it only in the early stages of pregnancy, when the ovum is still loosely attached to the uterine wall. Before and after a medical abortion, a control ultrasound examination is done.

The drug used to terminate a pregnancy is called mifepristone. It suppresses the action of the pregnancy hormone progesterone, as a result of which the cervix opens and softens, the walls of the uterus contract, and the ovum leaves its cavity. Medical abortion is contraindicated in bronchial asthma, ectopic pregnancy, uterine scarring, renal failure, and individual intolerance. Medical abortion at 5 weeks of gestation has shown high efficiency (97%), especially in combination with prostaglandins, and its only drawback is its high cost.

In the second month of pregnancy, an abortion can also be performed by vacuum aspiration. A synonym for this type of abortion is mini-abortion. It is safer than curettage of the uterine cavity, and it costs less than a medical abortion at 5 weeks.

The advantages of a vacuum abortion include the speed of manipulation (about 7-10 minutes), the absence of undesirable consequences for subsequent pregnancies. Also, after an abortion, ultrasound monitoring of the uterine cavity is required, since sometimes not all parts of the fetus are removed.

Short-term surgical abortion should be avoided if possible. With this type of abortion, the uterine cavity is scraped. The procedure is dangerous both in terms of possible damage to the walls of the uterus, as well as infection and incomplete removal of parts of the fetus.

What can be the consequences of an abortion at 5 weeks

When they talk about the consequences of abortion, they first of all mean the negative impact on a woman's health. All complications of abortion can be divided into:

  • Early (develop during or immediately after an abortion);
  • Late (develop after some time or after years).

Of the early complications, perforation of the uterine wall can be noted, while the intestines, bladder, and large blood vessels can also be damaged. Perforation of the uterus is fraught with bleeding and the development of peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum).

In addition, early complications of abortion include:

  • Damage to the cervix;
  • Blockage of blood vessels (embolism);
  • Exacerbation of chronic diseases of the female genital organs;
  • The introduction of infection into the uterine cavity.

Among the late complications are hormonal disruptions, endometriosis, infertility, adhesions in the abdominal cavity, an increase in the frequency of subsequent ectopic pregnancies, tumors of the mammary glands, body and cervix.

Sometimes a pregnancy is terminated at an early stage on its own, without a targeted effect on the fetus. This can be associated with fetal chromosomal abnormalities, hormonal deficiency, antiphospholipid syndrome, infection, etc.

Symptoms of an impending abortion are:

  • Lower abdominal pain;
  • Abdominal tension ("stone");
  • Bloody vaginal discharge;
  • Contractions of the uterus by the type of contractions.

At the first signs of a pregnancy abortion that has begun, you should immediately consult a doctor.
