Prospan is a herbal antitussive drug of expectorant, mucolytic and bronchospasmolytic action, which reduces the viscosity of sputum and promotes its discharge, contains a complex of biologically active substances.

Release form and composition

  • Drops for oral administration and inhalation: dark brown liquid with a characteristic smell of fennel and alcohol; during storage, a slight sediment and turbidity may form (20, 50 or 100 ml each in dark glass vials with a dropper stopper that closes with a screw cap, 1 vial in a cardboard box);
  • Syrup: a light brown substance, slightly cloudy, with a characteristic cherry smell (100 or 200 ml in dark glass bottles with a polyethylene dispensing stopper, screw cap, complete with a measuring cap, 1 set in a cardboard box).

Composition of 100 ml drops for oral administration and inhalation:

  • Active ingredient: dry extract of ivy leaves (extractant - ethanol 30%, in a ratio of 5-7.5: 1) - 2 g;
  • Auxiliary components: sodium saccharinate, ethanol 96%, anise oil, fennel oil, mint oil, purified water.

Composition of 100 ml syrup:

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Prospan is a herbal medicine. It is characterized by anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. The saponins included in the preparation have antibacterial and antifungal activity, and hederosaponins and triterpenoids provide an antispasmodic, expectorant and mucolytic effect. Flavonoids improve microcirculation, are hepato- and nephroprotective agents, activate diuresis and promote the excretion of uric acid salts from the body.

Pharmacokinetics

Since Prospan contains many biologically active components, being a dry extract of ivy leaves, it is not possible to study the pharmacokinetics of the drug.

Indications for use

Prospan is recommended for use as a natural expectorant in the treatment of chronic and acute inflammations of the respiratory tract, accompanied by a cough with difficult sputum.

Contraindications

A general contraindication for Prospan is individual hypersensitivity to its components. It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy and during breastfeeding due to insufficient data on the safety of its use during this period.

The duration of the course of therapy is determined by the complexity of the disease, the minimum course is 1 week.

Inhalation using Prospan drops can be carried out with all standard nebulizers (devices and devices for spraying without heating). To prevent the side effects of irritation due to the content of ethyl alcohol in the drops, for inhalation, the drug should be diluted with drinking water at room temperature in a 1: 2 ratio.

For inhalation 20-25 drops. the drug and 1 tbsp. pour a spoonful of water into a nebulizer, where the solution is sprayed onto dispersed particles, which should be inhaled through a tube or mask; repeat the procedure 3-5 times a day.

Side effects

Hypersensitivity reactions are possible during the use of Prospan.

Very rarely, due to the content of sorbitol in syrup, its use can have a laxative effect.

An overdose may occur when using doses of the drug that are significantly higher than prescribed (3 or more times), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea may occur. Therapy for the condition is symptomatic; the use of the product must be stopped and be sure to consult a doctor.

Overdose

If the patient has taken the drug in an amount significantly exceeding the maximum daily dose (more than 3 times), symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may appear. In this case, you must consult a doctor. Prospan is immediately canceled and symptomatic therapy is prescribed.

During storage, slight turbidity, formation of a precipitate in the preparation and a slight change in taste are possible (do not affect the therapeutic effect).

Prospan drops contain 47 vol. % alcohol, this is equivalent to the following amount of absolute ethyl alcohol:
