Release form and composition
Dosage form - solution for local application: red-brown syrupy, transparent liquid, with a specific smell of iodine (in a cardboard box 1 orange glass dropper bottle, 1 orange glass bottle or 1 brown glass bottle with a spray nozzle, containing 25, 30, 40, 50 or 100 g of solution, and instructions for the use of Lugol solution with glycerin; in a group carton of cardboard 36, 49 or 64 bottles of 25, 30, 40 or 50 g of solution or 16, 24 or 25 bottles of 100 g, complete with an equal number of instructions for medical use).
Composition of 100 g solution:
- active substance: iodine - 1 g;
- auxiliary components: glycerin (glycerol) - 85.5 g; potassium iodide - 2 g; purified water - 11.5 g.

Pharmacodynamics
Lugol's actions of a solution with glycerin due to the components contained in its composition:
- iodine: has a local irritant and antimicrobial properties - destroys some spores of fungi, viruses, cysts, protozoa, gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It has a strong bactericidal effect, which manifests itself quickly (for the most part it is predetermined by molecular iodine). Reacts with dead proteins and microorganisms, which leads to a weakening of its bactericidal action;
- potassium iodide: helps to improve the dissolution of iodine ions in water;
- glycerol: has a local emollient effect.
Pharmacokinetics
In cases of contact with mucous membranes, 30% of the drug is converted into iodides, the rest into active iodine.
Orally taken iodine is rapidly absorbed and takes part in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. It is removed from the body mainly in the urine in the form of various compounds, to a lesser extent with feces and then, during lactation, it is excreted into breast milk.
Indications for use
Lugol's solution with glycerin is prescribed for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory pathologies of the mucous membranes of the mouth, larynx and pharynx - with pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis and angular stomatitis (cheilitis).
Contraindications
Absolute:
- pregnancy;
- period of breastfeeding;
- individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Relative (Lugol's solution with glycerin is prescribed under medical supervision): dermatitis herpetiformis, hyperthyroidism, decompensated kidney and liver diseases, children under 12 years of age.

Lugol's solution solution with glycerin is intended exclusively for topical use.
By means of a cotton swab dipped in the preparation and wound on a spatula or using the spray nozzle supplied in the kit, the solution is applied to the inflamed mucous membrane of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx.
Side effects
During the period of Lugol's therapy with a solution with glycerin, allergic reactions may develop.
Prolonged use of the drug or the presence of hypersensitivity to iodine can lead to the occurrence of iodism. These include acne, urticaria-like skin rashes, rhinitis, burning throat, salivation, lacrimation, erythema, Quincke's edema, contact dermatitis, nausea, vomiting, bronchospasm.
Overdose
The main symptoms: irritation of the upper respiratory tract - bronchospasm, laryngospasm, burn. When ingested, hemoglobinuria, hemolysis, irritation of the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract develop. Taking about 3 g of the drug can be fatal.
Therapy: gastric lavage with sodium bicarbonate solutions or 0.5% sodium thiosulfate solution, intravenous administration of sodium thiosulfate 30% (up to 300 ml) or other solutions with a slightly alkaline reaction.

Patients with thyroid disorders should use iodine-containing preparations with caution.
The decomposition of active iodine is accelerated by sunlight and temperatures exceeding 40 ° C.
The drug should not be swallowed. It is important not to let it fall into your eyes. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, it is recommended to rinse them with sodium thiosulfate solution or plenty of water.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Lugol's solution with glycerin for throat during pregnancy / lactation is not prescribed.

- alkaline or acidic environment, the presence of pus, fat, blood: reduce the antiseptic activity of the solution;
- drugs that suppress the function of the thyroid gland: in the case of simultaneous use with accidental oral administration of Lugol's solution with glycerin, their effectiveness is weakened;
- acetylsalicylic acid and other drugs that irritate the gastric mucosa: their irritating effect may increase.
