Lugol's solution is a drug based on molecular iodine, used mainly for lubricating or irrigating the mucous membrane of the larynx, pharynx and oral cavity in infectious and inflammatory diseases.
pharmachologic effect
Lugol's solution has antiseptic, antifungal and local irritating properties.
For the preparation of this drug, 10% calcium iodide, 5% iodine and 85% water are used. Lugol's solution with glycerin contains 1% iodine, 2% potassium iodide, 3% water and 94% glycerin.
Lugol's solution is active against most gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, pathogenic fungi. Potassium iodide improves and accelerates the dissolution of iodine, while glycerin has a softening effect on the affected areas.
Indications for the use of Lugol's solution
The instruction recommends using Lugol's solution in the following cases:
- with infectious and inflammatory diseases of the larynx and pharynx (tonsillitis, tonsillitis);
- with angular stomatitis (seizures);
- for the treatment of purulent otitis media;
- with atrophic rhinitis;
- for the prevention of thyroid diseases caused by a low iodine content in the environment (endemic goiter)
- with varicose and trophic ulcers;
- for the treatment of infected burns and wounds;
- for the treatment of fresh chemical and thermal burns;
- with tertiary syphilis;
- for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.
Contraindications
Lugol's solution should not be used with hypersensitivity to iodine.
Instructions for using Lugol's solution
Lugol is available in the form of a solution and spray.
Locally, the drug is used to irrigate or lubricate the mucous membrane of the pharynx, mouth, pharynx 4-6 times a day, for irrigation of the nasopharynx - for 2-3 months, 2-3 times a week, for washing and instillation into the ear - for 2- 4 weeks.
In surgical practice, Lugol's solution, application occurs as needed, gauze napkins dipped in the preparation are applied to the affected areas.
In case of epidemic goiter, Lugol's solution is used orally - 1 drop a day for 3 weeks. Such courses should be repeated 2-3 times with 20-30-day breaks. To protect against radiation, the drug is administered orally for 3 weeks, twice a day, 10 drops.
Lugol's solution for children is usually prescribed to treat the mucous membrane of the pharynx and mouth 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days. For the convenience of treating children, it is recommended to use the drug in the form of a spray.
Side effects
The use of Lugol's solution can provoke the phenomenon of iodism, manifested in the form of a runny nose, salivation, urticaria, dry skin, contact dermatitis, itching, burning, bronchospasm, vomiting, nausea.
Additional Information
Lugol's solution with glycerin should not be used simultaneously with disinfectants, in particular with hydrogen peroxide. Store the drug in a dark, dry and cool place.
