Hernias under the eyes usually do not give a person much discomfort and do not affect his vision, but they look unaesthetic, give the face an older and tired look, which is important for many people. It is practically impossible to hide the defect with the help of cosmetics.

Most often, this phenomenon is observed in women over 30 years old.

The reasons

Pathology can develop due to the anatomical features of the ocular tissues, usually against the background of age-related changes. When the skin loses its elasticity, fatty tissue penetrates under them, which leads to the formation of hernias. It is believed that the cause of the formation is a genetic predisposition.

Risk factors include:

  • metabolic disorders;
  • skin diseases;
  • circulatory disorders;
  • frequent stress;
  • sleep disorders, chronic fatigue;
  • bad habits;
  • improper nutrition;
  • excessive use of makeup;
  • increased eye strain;
  • the presence of ophthalmic diseases;
  • excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays on the eyelids (when sunbathing, visiting a solarium without special glasses).

How does it manifest

Hernias can develop under the skin of both the lower and upper eyelids. Pathology can extend to the inner corner of the upper eyelid.

The photo shows that hernias are similar to ordinary edema (bags) under the eyes. The difference is in the persistence of manifestations: bags can appear against the background of overwork, sleep disturbances, alcohol abuse (especially at night). Swelling usually goes away after enough rest, and you can get rid of them quite quickly by applying cold compresses to the eyelids or using another means. In addition, you can distinguish a hernia from the usual swelling under the eyes by gently pressing your finger on the eyeball. If the swelling in the lower eyelid has increased, it is likely that the mass is indeed a hernia.

Treatment

It is possible to completely remove the hernia only with the help of surgical intervention. There are several methods of surgical treatment.

Method Description
Transconjunctival plastic of the lower eyelids It is used in cases where the formations under the eyes are small. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. During the operation, the skin is punctured, through which excess adipose tissue is removed through a special tube, which is inserted under the mucous membrane of the eyelid. Rehabilitation is fast enough.
Removal of a hernia with a laser Usually performed under local anesthesia. During the operation, a small incision (3-4 mm) is made on the skin, after which the adipose tissue is exposed to a laser, then sutures are applied. This method is most effective for small hernias.
Excision of a hernia with a scalpel

It can be carried out under local or general anesthesia, which depends on the size of education, the presence of indications and contraindications, as well as the wishes of the patient. During the operation, a small incision is made along the edge of the lower eyelid, excess fat is removed, and an area of stretched skin can also be excised, after which cosmetic sutures are applied. The rehabilitation period after removing the hernia using this method is slightly longer (up to 4 weeks). In the postoperative period, the patient may experience soreness at the site of the operation, bruising and swelling around the eyes.

A contraindication to surgery may be if the patient has:

  • dry keratoconjunctivitis;
  • diseases of infectious etiology;
  • increased intraocular and / or blood pressure;
  • hematological diseases;
  • acquired immunodeficiency syndrome;
  • severe diseases of internal organs;
  • diabetes mellitus.

If after the operation the patient does not follow the instructions of the attending physician, relapses are possible.

Conservative treatment can reduce the size of hernias, prevent their enlargement.

Hardware procedures

Table. Hardware procedures used for hernias under the eyes

Method Explanation
Lymphatic drainage

The effect on tissues is carried out with a current of low voltage and low strength; using the device, a massage is performed, which improves the work of the sebaceous glands, muscle tone and thereby reduces hernia

Ultrasonic lifting An effect is made on the skin under the eyes with ultrasound, which improves the functioning of the sebaceous glands, uniform distribution of fat and reduces the formation of
Thermolifting The action is carried out with a high frequency current, which prevents the growth of hernia, promotes the production of its own collagen
Fractional thermolysis During the procedure, a laser and special lenses are used, which improves blood circulation, reduces formations and prevents their reappearance

Hardware methods are used in cases where the hernia has not reached a large size. Such procedures, as a rule, do not make it possible to get rid of the pathology once and for all, so they must be carried out systematically.

In addition, it is possible to reduce formations on the lower eyelids with the help of carboxytherapy, plasma lifting. With the help of mesotherapy, you can improve lymph drainage, blood circulation and metabolism.

Some procedures, provided they are regular, help to cope quite effectively with hernias under the eyes, although they do not completely eliminate them

Contraindications to the use of these methods:

  • skin diseases;
  • allergy;
  • infectious processes;
  • malignant neoplasms;
  • diabetes;
  • mental disorders;
  • the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Using folk remedies at home

To prevent the development of pathology, as well as to prevent relapse at home, folk remedies are often used. The most popular ones are:

  1. Green tea compress. For the procedure, you need to brew tea bags, cool them, apply to the skin under the eyes and leave for a while. After using this product, the face will look fresher.
  2. Broth of parsley. Fresh parsley (30 g) is chopped, poured with 1 glass of boiling water, kept on low heat for 5 minutes, allowed to cool and filtered. In the finished product, cotton pads are moistened, applied to the eyelids and left for about 7 minutes. You can also make ice from the broth and wipe the skin under the eyes with it.
  3. Potato compress. For the procedure, the potatoes should be boiled, cooled, cut into plates and applied to the eyelids.
  4. Sesame oil. In the absence of contraindications, apply a small amount of sesame oil to the skin under the eyes and rub it with light massage movements until completely absorbed.
  5. Vegetable compress. Potatoes crushed to a gruel state can be applied to the eyelids, to which you can also add cucumber and parsley. The mixture is placed on cheesecloth, squeezed slightly and applied to the eyelid skin for 30 minutes.
  6. Compresses with infusion of linden, chamomile, rosemary, arnica. 1 tablespoon of dry raw materials is poured with 1 glass of boiling water, allowed to cool, cotton pads are moistened with the prepared infusion and applied to the eyelids.

Gymnastics for the face

To improve blood circulation and tone of the eye muscles, special exercises are used that help to increase tissue tone and thereby make hernial formations less noticeable.

  1. Close your eyes for 30 seconds, then open your eyes wide. The exercise is repeated 5-10 times.
  2. Close your eyes for 10 seconds, then open them wide and look up. These actions are repeated 5-6 times.
  3. Blink quickly for 10 seconds, after which you need to close your eyes for 5 seconds, open them and focus your gaze on an object that is far away (you should not strain your eyesight). The exercise is repeated 5 times.
  4. Without turning your head, look to the right for 5-10 seconds, after which you need to look straight ahead and close your eyes. The same steps should be done while looking to the left. The exercise is repeated 5 times.

Prevention

To prevent the development of a pathological process, you need:

  • rejection of bad habits;
  • full and sufficient night's sleep, normalization of work and rest;
  • avoidance of stressful situations;
  • maintaining an active lifestyle;
  • balanced diet.

It is advisable to spend less time on activities that require eye strain, during such work take regular breaks to allow your eyes to rest.
