IORT technique - new in the treatment of breast cancer in Israel

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Its peculiarity is the defeat of the young and able-bodied population. To date, in Israel, oncologists have been able to achieve high results in women with such a diagnosis thanks to the introduction of high technologies in medicine and innovative treatment methods - https://telaviv-clinic.ru/clinic/disease/lechenie-raka-grudi-v-izraile/ …

One of the most effective and advanced methods is the Intrabeam or IORT technology - intraoperative targeted radiotherapy. The technique has found widespread use in Israeli clinics and has shown an improvement in patient survival rates compared to traditional treatments.

Method principle

The essence of the method lies in the fact that during the operation to remove the primary tumor focus, additional equipment is used, with the help of which the operating field is targeted with gamma radiation.

Numerous studies have shown that a large number of cases of cancer recurrence are associated with the dissemination of cancer cells into healthy tissues during surgery. In this regard, many treatment protocols even changed, and removal of the primary tumor faded into the background. For example, in stage 1, 2 and 4 cervical cancer, surgery to remove the uterus has become unnecessary.

Taking these factors into account, the IORT system was developed, which prevents relapse by killing invisible atypical cells in blood vessels and tissues. In addition to breast cancer, the indications for its implementation are also tumors of the lungs, liver and some parenchymal organs. However, the technology has demonstrated the highest efficiency in cases of breast tumors.

How is Intrabim therapy performed?

If the patient has a high risk of recurrence during the preliminary examination, or if the diagnosis shows a significant lesion of the lymph nodes with metastases, IORT is prescribed. Preparation proceeds as for a standard tumor removal operation.

During surgery, in addition to the tumor, nearby lymph nodes and part of the healthy tissue of the gland are also removed. After that, special radiological equipment of the Intrabim system is installed over the operating field.

Before this, the radiologist accurately calculates the radiation dose and, together with the operating specialists, selects the treatment area for the IORT. Irradiation usually goes away within a few minutes.

The main advantages of the technique are targeted radiological exposure directly to the pathological focus. Indeed, when a neoplasm is removed, cancer cells remain invisible to the eye of the surgeon in the tissues, which, after removal, can remain dormant for years, and then lead to a relapse of breast cancer.

IORT technology can destroy these microscopic lesions without causing significant harm to the patient, as is the case with conventional radiation therapy. At the same time, the effect on healthy tissues is minimal, since the IORT device is located in two planes relative to the patient and only treats the surgical field directly.

The use of the Intrabeam method in Israeli clinics together with other modern methods of breast cancer treatment - monoclonal antibodies, targeted and biological therapy - allows minimizing the number of relapses. Regardless of the stage of the disease, any woman with this approach has a chance for recovery and a full life.
