Citral - is an oily yellowish liquid, insoluble in water and with a characteristic lemon scent.
Chemical structure
Citral is an unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde resembling in its chemical structure the structure of the side chain of the vitamin A.
Pharmacological action of Citral
Citral has analgesic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. The drug is quite active against most pathological microorganisms. In addition, it well stimulates the processes of epithelization (healing of injuries) of the cornea and conjunctiva. According to reviews, Citral applied to the skin is practically not absorbed (not absorbed).
Indications
Citral is mainly used topically to treat:
• Conjunctivitis;
• Keratitis;
• Dry Sjogren's syndrome (hypolacrimia);
• Cracked nipples in nursing mothers.
Citral is included in many medicines as one of the excipients that give them a pleasant lemon scent. The most famous mixture with Citral, which is widely used in pediatric practice.
Instructions for use
For eye diseases, Citral is used in the form of an aqueous-alcoholic solution (1: 10000), which is instilled into each eye, two drops three times a day.
According to reviews, Citral is very effective in the treatment of nipple cracks. In this case, a small gauze napkin is moistened in the solution of the drug, and applied to the nipples after each feeding and at night. Immediately before feeding, the napkin is removed, and the nipple and areola area are thoroughly washed under running water until all Citral residues are removed.
Contraindications for use
According to the instructions, Citral is contraindicated if the patient has an individual hypersensitivity to this drug.

Interaction of Citral with other drugs
The combined use of Citral and Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) significantly accelerates the epithelialization of the cornea and conjunctiva.
