Codelac tablets

Codelac is a combined drug with antitussive and expectorant effects.

Release form and composition

The drug is produced in the form of tablets: from brown to yellow interspersed with dark brown to white (in blisters of 10 pcs., 1 or 2 packages in a cardboard box).

The composition of 1 tablet contains active ingredients:

  • Sodium bicarbonate - 200 mg;
  • Codeine - 8 mg;
  • Lanceolate thermopsis, herb (in powder form) - 20 mg;
  • Licorice root (powder) 200 mg

Auxiliary components: microcrystalline cellulose, talc, potato starch.

Pharmacological properties

Codelac is a combined drug characterized by a pronounced antitussive and expectorant effect. Codeine reduces the excitability of the cough center, has a weak sedative and analgesic effect, and suppresses the reflexes responsible for prolonged cough. In small doses, the drug does not suppress the respiratory center, does not reduce bronchial secretion, and does not disrupt the functioning of the ciliated epithelium.

The active components of the thermopsis herb are isoquinoline alkaloids. It helps to excite the respiratory and stimulate the vomiting centers. Codelac has a pronounced expectorant effect, which consists in increasing the tone of the smooth muscles of the bronchi due to the vagotropic effect, intensifying the activity of the ciliated epithelium and more accelerated excretion of secretions, enhancing the secretory function of the bronchial glands.

The biologically active components of the drug have ganglion-blocking properties. Sodium bicarbonate stimulates the motor function of bronchioles and ciliated epithelium, reduces the viscosity of sputum and makes the pH of bronchial mucus more alkaline.

Licorice root is characterized by antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects. Expectorant properties are explained by the content of glycyrrhizin, which stimulates the activity of the ciliated epithelium located in the trachea and bronchi. This substance also increases the secretory function of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. The antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles is due to the presence of flavone compounds (the most active is liquiditoside).

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

The anti-inflammatory effect is to stop the inflammatory reactions caused by bradykinin, serotonin and histamine. Glycyrrhizic acid is metabolized in the body, providing a glucocorticosteroid-like effect.

The drug takes effect 30-60 minutes after administration. The duration of action is approximately 6 hours. Pharmacokinetic data are not available.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Codelac is used for bronchopulmonary diseases for the symptomatic treatment of dry cough, which has a different etiology.

Contraindications

  • Bronchial asthma;
  • Respiratory failure;
  • Simultaneous use with alcohol and central analgesics (nalbuphine, buprenorphine, pentazocine);
  • Age up to 2 years;
  • Pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding (lactation);
  • Hypersensitivity to drug components.

With increased intracranial pressure, be careful.

Instructions for use of Codelac: method and dosage

Codelac tablets should be taken orally.

Recommended dosage regimen: 1 tablet 2-3 times a day.

You can take the drug for a short course (no longer than a few days).

It should be borne in mind that the maximum adult single dose of codeine when taken orally is 50 mg, the daily dose is 200 mg.

The dose of Codelac for children is determined by the doctor.

Patients with functional impairment of the kidneys are advised to increase the interval between doses of the drug (due to the slowdown in the elimination of codeine).

Side effects

  • Allergic reactions: urticaria, pruritus;
  • Digestive system: constipation, vomiting, nausea;
  • Central nervous system: drowsiness, headache;
  • Others: with prolonged therapy, drug dependence on codeine may occur.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms are bladder atony, vomiting, drowsiness, bradycardia, arrhythmias, bradypnea, nystagmus, pruritus. When taking the drug in high doses, the stomach is washed and symptomatic therapy is prescribed. If necessary, a codeine antagonist, naloxone, is administered and measures are taken to restore the activity of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems (including the administration of atropine analeptics).

special instructions

Before you start taking the drug, you need to establish the cause of the cough and confirm the need for special therapy.

Do not take Codelac tablets in conjunction with expectorant and mucolytic drugs.

Long-term treatment with high doses can lead to drug dependence.

It should be borne in mind that Codelac belongs to doping, since it contains codeine.

Due to the likelihood of a sedative effect, it is not recommended to engage in types of work that require rapid psychomotor reactions and increased attention during therapy.

Pediatric use

You can use Codelac for children from the age of 2 years.

With impaired renal function

In patients with renal dysfunction, the elimination of codeine is slowed down, therefore it is recommended to increase the intervals between doses of the drug.

Drug interactions

With the simultaneous use of certain drugs, the following effects may develop:

  • Chloramphenicol: enhancing the action of codeine;
  • Hypnotics, antipsychotic, antihistamines, sedatives, central analgesics, anxiolytics: increased depression of the respiratory center and sedation (the combination is not recommended);
  • Cardiac glycosides (including digoxin): enhancing their action;
  • Adsorbents, coating and astringent preparations: reduced absorption of codeine.

Analogs

Kodelak's analogues are: Sinekod, Libeksin, Pertussin.

Terms and conditions of storage

Store in a dry, dark place, out of reach of children, at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C.
