It initiates the activation of enzymes (including choline and cholinesterase), as a cofactor it participates in a variety of enzymatic processes. It controls the flow of energy supply to muscles, being a membrane protector, and helps to stabilize the phospholipids of the cell membrane. Acting as a physiological blocker of slow calcium channels, magnesium is able to displace calcium from the binding sites.

The drug ensures the course of metabolic processes, improves interneuronal transmission and regulates muscle excitability. By preventing the flow of calcium ions through the presynaptic membrane, in the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system, it reduces the amount of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Pharmacokinetics

The absorption of magnesium is dose-dependent, mostly in the small intestine, its value depends on the serum level of the substance in the blood. The absorbed drug is eliminated by the kidneys, and only a small part through the sweat glands and with bile.
