Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Iodine is a chemical element necessary in the body for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, since it is present in the composition of its hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, as well as for the prevention of the development of cretinism and endemic goiter.

Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin essential for the growth and development of the immune and circulatory systems. With its deficiency, homocysteine (a marker of atherosclerotic changes) accumulates in the blood plasma, the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) cells, preparing for chromosome replication and division, is disrupted. Folic acid is the main factor in the formation of the central nervous system (CNS), which develops in humans on the 15–28th day after fertilization: in the form of tetrahydrofolate, it takes part in the synthesis of nucleic acids and cell division, as a coenzyme it is present in the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.

Pharmacokinetics

Potassium iodide from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is rapidly absorbed. Its bioavailability is 100%. It is distributed in all tissues within 2 hours. Accumulates in the thyroid gland, mammary and salivary glands. It is excreted mainly by the kidneys, partially excreted with the secretion of the salivary, sweat and bronchial glands.

Folic acid is well absorbed in the digestive tract. Intensively binds to blood proteins. After 30-60 minutes, the maximum concentration of the substance is determined in the blood. Folic acid is metabolized in the liver to tetrahydrofolic acid. Excreted by the kidneys as metabolites.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Iodofol is recommended to be included in the diet to prevent a lack of iodine and folic acid in the body in the following conditions / diseases:

  • preparation of a woman for pregnancy, the period of gestation and lactation (breastfeeding);
